hm....the world is a bit shaky.....
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

Most people on the island slept through and didn't really notice...unlike the other one

I see the byline date is 24.12.04. As it was in the middle of nowhere, it was obviously eclipsed by yesterday's horrific event. I see this has now been upgraded to 9.0 with >12000 dead.

I know seismologists poopooh the idea, but I've noticed that if there is a major quake soomewhere in the world, another quake often occurs somewhere else, often about a third of the way round the world in some direction or another, within a few days, sometimes with a third one a few days later again. Here is a case: firstly the "south of Tasmania" one, 3 days late,r the Sumatra one. Coincidence? I feel the statistical probabilities are sufficiently high to justify the thought, even though there is no scientific explanation, as yet.

I totally agree. This kind of "coincidence" has happened far too often in the past to truely be "concidental". IMO it's akin to contra-coup impact injuries to the head: hit it in one place and more damage occurs elsewhere.

Do the 2 recent quakes share any tectonic plates?

              Yes
The area is like collision central.

If you want a big picture scare then get a globe and draw a great circle.
More or less from Chile through Alaska to the vicinity of the last quake.

It forms a streight line of historical great quakes and makes it look like the world is breaking in two.

PS I noticed this when we flew to China.
              LA to Guangzhou.
Our flight followed a great circle and looked like a tour of the "ring of fire".

Well if you think about it, it had a good shake. So if it was close to breaking the shaking from the first quake could be enough to release the jammed plates.
