FWIW, I'm with the Norwich Union for insurance, and I pay an extra £3.95/month to cover emergencies. It covers all parts and labour and warrantees it. In this case that would have got the pipes fixed and the mopping up done, and the regular insurance should take care of the rest. I don't know if your company has that option?

Ow, thats a nightmare indeed.

Our plumbing here is from the 1930's.

So far, no problems, but Im really, really skeptic about the large, rusted, never been used handles in the basement, thats supposed to cut off the flow of water.....
