Yes, they did have one death, but considering the size of the crew, they came out rather well.

Just looked it up, he was killed when he hit his head against a pump and that 23 others were being treated for broken bones, lacerations and bruises.

Watch Das Boot sometime. One of the best movies evar (actually, watch the mini series, the movie - even the director's cut, is a lot shorter than the six hours mini series)

Have the directors edition of Das Boot on DVD (and the German soundtrack with subtitles is the only way to listen, the "wimpified" English soundtrack is annoying.) I've seen the mini-series DVD for sale but didn't know if I wanted to watch 6 hours of people sitting around waiting for something to happen.

At the beginning of The Abyss, an American attack submarine plunges headfirst into the ocean floor at top speed. The nose explodes and water rushes in and kills all aboard. It's a pretty harrowing scene.. we used to use it for a surround sound demo and it scared the crap outta people it was so realistic.

I hated K19 Widowmaker. The story could have been the foundation for more than one great movie, but the acting was so-so, and neither the action, nor the suspense, nor the political ramifications have really been played out, and I never did get the feeling of these people being in the very confined space of a submarine. The only thing I remember from that movie was the great shots where they had "shore leave" on the ice.

Das Boot on the other hand is full of suspense, and you really get agoraphobia If you haven't watched it, Elie, you really should if you like submarine flicks.

So KvH, you're trying to say the damage to that submarine was really caused by an alien probe they were chasing which somehow caused all the power onboard to fail, leading them to collide with some underwater terrain?

That actually brings up another question... how do aliens always seem to be able to make ANY electrical device in a wide area stop working, even flashlights, and yet not kill or at least incapacitate humans?

It is the alien electric-stop-effect. This is a well known phenomenom.

Wow what the **** did they run into?
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

U571.... Yuck... First of all, the story isnt belivable for one sec..

                          Widow maker.. ah nice one,
I also like The Hunt for the Red October, and Das Boot, the ultimate Sub movie. I also have the original movie, on LD, there the english soundtrack is played by some english actors, it really sucks to hear someone with a clear british accent say, "Come on chaps, lets get em!", when they are sinking a british tanker. No I have to say that the german soundtrack is the ultimate one. BTW, the sub used for the recordings, is one of the norwegian subs that was in service till 1980.. (old german sub type 7)

Submarines running aground is a little more common than one might think; however, the incidents are far less impacting as this one was (being that they come away with little more than some scratches on the hull). Far less common than plane crashes though.

Given the damage it was a good thing they were able to seal off the breached sections. Incidentally, the San Francisco had just been assigned to Guam as its homeport.

I liked U571, though it was definitely a little sad as a "real-life" story and, to a degree, didn't do justice to those who actually accomplished some of the feats the submariners in said movie did. Das Boot is by far the best submarine movie, with Hunt For Red October coming in a somewhere behind. Still, nothing beats actually being on a submarine
