  • What's wrong with this picture?

Imagine a neighborhood, a noisy neighborhood in a college town. Two young men live in an apartment in this neighborhood. The two young men decide to throw a Chinese New Year party on Saturday. Friends come in, there is food, music and everyone is having a good time. The only people going outside are those who want to grab a smoke.

Suddenly, around 11pm nine, count them, nine police officers come to the door. The officers tell the two men they have received a noise complaint. The hosts comply and turn the music off. The officers ask if anyone is underage, the response is a truthful no. The two young men are respectful and cooperative. The officers then write a ticket to each of the hosts for $350 and tell them to appear in court at the end of this month.

    So let me recap here:
    Saturday night
    College town
7 blocks away from the school in a neighborhood that always has parties going around
    My ticket has 10:39pm, my roommate's 11:05pm
    No minors
Everyone inside and just having fun, not being beligerent
    9 cops senta
    Currently $700 in fines
We have never had problems before
Both my roomate and I have clean records
    No warnings at all

been in that situation before, even at parties where there may be a few questionable age infractions.
usually only one car and two officers would arrive, make sure every one leaves, issue a warning, and leave themselves.

seems they were issued wrong information, got pissed because they had to be there, and fined you because they couldn't fine the ppl who made the complaint.
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

The more I hear the more I am glad I live where I do. $350 is pretty steep, isn't there anything you can do?

@Az: Hopefully the fine gets reduced in court.

@RC Agent: Do you mean that the New Year isn't until Wed? Racism? My roommmate is white, but maybe the neighbors don't like me?

Actually that is one thing, I'm actually pretty friendly with the neighbors that I run into. Anytime I see them I smile and say hi. If there was a problem the person could have come over and talked to me face-to-face and everything would have been cool.

Go to court and explain the situation truthfully to the judge. He/she'll probably throw away the charges.

Who calls the cops for loud noise on a Satrurday anyways?

Morons that's who! I really hope you win this in court dude, cause that sucks royally. Plus they gave you 2 tickets with different hours?? Did the cops actually show up at those times?

Yes, I'm just saying, MAYBE the issue wasn't the noise, but the Chinese New Year. Is that a possibility? Obviously, someone didn't feel like having a fact-to-face confrontation.

I went to court the other day. The fine got reduced to $115 each. So it is good that we went from a total of $700 to a total of $230, but it still sucks that we had to pay at all. Plus I missed a day of classes and work, my roommate missed work. Oh well, it's over now. C'est La Vie.
