I did a 2 week sight-seeing trip from Seattle to San Diego once, via Oregon/Idaho/Utah/Colorado/Arizona. The only co. that would do that was Hertz and they charged an extra $100 for out-of-state returns. I always insure: you never know and I'd rather pay more and be able to sleep on both ears, not worrying whether some yobbo would pinch it or crash into it.

Car hire in the USA

I managed to get a car rental locally for a decent rate.. 10 days with unlimited miles.
I drove that car 3800 miles in that time.. the entire length of I35, actually. Went all the way to Duluth to visit a friend there, and came to the very end point of the road. Then after coming back, I drove south to Laredo and down to the lower Rio Grande valley to visit another friend. Boy, was the lady at the rental place pissed. Nothing she could do but write an angry note to me though. Not 6 months later I wrecked my old car and went back and bought that same car. No problems for 3800 miles.. I guess that was enough of a test drive. And I got it for $4000 less than an identical car with more miles that was sitting on the local dealer's used car lot.
