All the more reason not to pull the switch on people who are supposedly in limited states of conciousness because it's PC or economically expedient.
Fact is recent research using fMRI's (Functional MRI scans) show that people in such states are much more aware then previously thought;
Because of this new research many neurologists and medical ethicists now think a whole new look has to be given to the states of coma and how we treat people in them.
We may well have been pulling the plug on people who were aware of their surroundings and what alternatives were being discussed

Maybe not, but who is to say what someone in that state wants? Maybe they live for visits where they can see their kids grow, if not interact with them.
You also have to remember that there is a whole new world of prosthetics coming along that allow people to "talk" using Stephen Hawking-style computer voices and operate robotic manipulator arms, all using brain-wave control learned using biofeedback techniques.
This will revolutionize how well people in such states can interact with the world.
