help me remember the name of this movie

I think I saw it in the 80s.

It was a 3D cartoon. I think it was futuristic.

It was about a boy who found a sword handle and he's trying to find the blade.

IIRC, it was a good movie. I'd like to see if it's out on DVD, etc.

Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure I remember things like starships, space travel, laser guns, but with medievil themes as well.

There was something about how the blade would appear magically when the boy was in trouble and he later realises he can control the blade with his mind.
