I guess I should check out the trailer but it sounds like nobody thinks Steve Martin can pull this off.

I have seen many Black Adder shows (I preffer the medieval seasons to the WW1 seasons). Rowan's a very funny guy (though I never liked Bean that much). But I don't know about a PP role.

Steve Martin's a funny guy too. I have enjoyed his work since I first saw him on the tonight show, even before his SNL days. But I must agree...He's not the man to do Clauseou.....I think Kevin Kline (playing chief inspector in this movie) would have done better. Martin's French accent is WAY too fake and cheasy, his schtick not subtle enough.

No matter how hard I think about it, I cannot think of anyone worthy of filling the role. Sellers WAS the definative Clauseou, and I believe they should have let the series die off before the last one was finished (Sellers started the last movie, died very early in production, but they put it out anyway (made up with a bunch of old cuts from previous films), and it was HORRIBLE).

I thought that i'd give the trailer a look with an open mind. But i think i have to agree, it just doesn't look like it's going to be that good.

Is it just me or does Steve Martin just not look right? (besides any feelings people may have about his ability to perform the role).

Steve Martin is hilarious. Rowan Atkinson is hilarious. That doesn't have anything to do with properly casting a role. Clouseau is just not their character, in my humble opinion. Can you imagine Peter Sellers or John Cleese playing The Jerk? No way. Cleese could probably do Blackadder, but it's Atkinson's role, and he would be out of place. I agree that Kevin Kline would have done better as Clouseau than as Dreyfuss. They probably should have switched those parts.. but then Martin would be taking second billing, and he is supposedly a "bigger star" Stupid Hollywood. I remember Spartacus for two supporting characters.. those of Charles Laughton and Peter Ustinov. Definitely the best of that troupe (including Olivier) yet either one would have been ridiculous playing Spartacus.

The budget looks much too high judging by the opening shots.

I agree steve martin is not right for this role.

I'm gonna be contraversial and say Robin Williams could do it better. It would have to be a compromise between his comedic roles and his dramatic roles - by which I mean he would maintain a lot of his humour (and accents), but lose a lot of his silliness.
