Yes, but I hope her husband doesn't. 'That SOB wouldn't even let her parents and priest into her room when she died. B*****d.
IMO when a "spouse" is in this position and has started another family there should be a presumed conflict of interest and he should not be making life of death decisions for the disabled spouse. Physical guardianship should then revert back to her family.
Just recently had a friend die who had been in a extremely serious car accident 2.5 years ago that caused, among other problems, severe brain damage. Due to brainstem and cerebellum damage and also not breathing for a unknown time frame before EMS arrived at the somewhat remote location (plus who knows what else) he wasn't able to breath well or perform any motor functions effectively. Without the ability to communicate we never really knew how much of "him" was still "in there," I.E. how much his higher brain function and personality was intact but trapped without a way to express himself. A sudden and rather aggressive lung infection was the final cause of death, which is not all that uncommon with people in similar situations who are barely able to breath on their own at all, let alone be able to cough.
My opinion about severe brain damage is complex and depends on the individual situation, but one important consideration is the lack of any ability to communicate for an extended period of time. If I were able to think just fine but not interact in the slightest with the world and there were no indication that there would be any improvments I would rather not live the rest of my life wishing I could get someone to scratch that itch on my foot or something.

In this case it is more like how would you feel if your corps was allowed to run on auto pilot for 15 years with you not occupying it.
I didn't like this whole thing one bit and I'm angry at how it was handled by both the husband and the government
First, the decision was made to let her live and they've done so for 15 years... and now all of a sudden the husband changed his mind and decided not to extend her life anymore, well what he should've done was divorsed her, gave her back to her parents to take care of her (which is what they wanted to do) end of story.
Then the fu***d up decision was made to let her starve from hunger and thirst for 13 days which is the most crule way to take ones life instead of an easy and painless (leathal injection) I believe this is inhumane and sensless way of killing someone!!!!
Americans and the world alike are disgusted by the way terrorists and third world countries treat prisoners, so how come the hospital resorted to such cruelty to kill the guys wife??????????????????????????????
And finally I totally agree with Doc, the husband shouldn't have been given the ultimate decision when or how to take her life if there are family members that are willing to help out in any way!

Actually, there is a thread and people are very vocal about her. For respect of Terri, I won't post the thread. May she rest in peace finally ...
I think the forum should show their respect right now for Terri by mourning her passing and celebrating her life. I didn't personally know Terri but I believe she deserves a respectful period of mourning without debate about her death.

Rant mode off
May you finally rest in peace Terri
Maybe if you actually knew the facts instead of relying on what the doc said, you might feel differently. I'll also point out that several of the assumptions you made are incorrect as well.
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.
1. 15 years ago, give or take, Terri lapsed into a coma. Shortly thereafter, her brain started shutting down.
2. 15 years ago minus several days, all higher brain function ceased. Her brainstem, sadly, stayed intact.
3. 15 years ago minus a few weeks, her husband began taking nursing classes so that he could care for her "when she got better". Doctors informed him this would NEVER happen.
4. A couple years later, he FINALLY opened his eyes, and said "wow, she has a brain flatline - no brainwaves, no activity at all and her MRI is completely blank". He asked the doctors "will she ever get better" and they said "we already told you NO NOT EVER".
5. He said "well then, pull the plug". THIS is where the trouble started. Enter her family.
6. The Schindlers are religious nutbags. They believe all kinds of bizarre crap. Even given my normal everyday contempt for religious fervor, these people take the cake. For 12+ years they have sued to try to keep their daughter "alive". They believe - SERIOUSLY BELIEVE - that she "talks" to them. They believe that she answers questions, and says things. Seriously!
7. Every doctor that has EVER examined her has said "she is persistent vegetative". EVERY ONE. The only doctors that don't say that have admitted, under oath, that they have REFUSED TO EXAMINE HER. Every doctor that is on the Schindlers' side... hasn't examined her.
8. In EVERY STATE IN THIS COUNTRY, when you go persistent vegetative your NEXT OF KIN gets to decide if you're kept on a machine or not. Guess who your NEXT OF KIN is, in EVERY STATE IN THIS COUNTRY? Oh, could it be... your SPOUSE? Yup, yessireeeeeee!
9. EVERY COURT that has reviewed this case has, after looking at the facts, issued a judgement that goes like this: "She is braindead and persistent vegetative. Her husband has the right to order the plug pulled, and we uphold that." EVERY SINGLE DAMN ONE.
10. She wasn't "alive in there somewhere but unable to communicate". She left the building 15 years ago. What we need to address is her immortal soul. Either you believe that the soul is tied to the physical body - something I find absurd - in which case keeping her alive just keeps her soul from reaching heaven which is sad. OR you believe that her soul departed when her higher brain function did... in which case keeping her alive is an abomination - a soulless carcass, kept alive through machines.
11. Did I mention that her family are loons? They REALLY REALLY BELIEVE THAT SHE COULD TALK!
12. All of that said - her husband is kind of an as$hole. But not because he remarried - I mean c'mon! Your wife is DEAD, but her family won't let her corpse die! You mourn for a while and then you move on... and meet someone! But he's not an as$hole because of that. All reports indicate that he's a controlling SOB. But hey - it takes all kinds. He never abused her, and it's HIS CALL, DAMMIT.
Ok, all of that said - the religious freaks and our lawmakers (who are PANDERING to the religious freaks) are PISSING ME OFF OVER THIS. She DIED 15 years ago. DEAD. DEAD AS A FU(KING DOORKNOB. Anyone who doesn't understand that, or thinks that she "might have gotten better" needs to be put out of their misery.
The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!
I'm the least you could do
If only life were as easy as you
I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
I would still get screwed

From what I heard, he was running out of money to keep her alive.
Titanium is the new bling!

Thanks Gurm for stating the FACTS. I just didn't have the energy to type all of that.
