  • Remember the Acid2 test?

Remember that CSS2 test "Acid2". It was done by Opera's CTO HÃ¥kon Wium Lie (inventor of CSS), and many of you assumed this would just be a marketing instrument for Opera. Well, every Opera version fails this test. IE, unsurprisingly, does, too, and FF also doesn't render it correctly. Maybe some KHTML browser does, I don't know since I can't afford a mac

So I'm hoping this test will, like the first Acid test did, help spread the support for CSS.

Az - get Suse, you can install it free of FTP, it has KHTML and looks (eyecendy, polish, system sounds) very good. If I were übergeek I'd install it on a laptop, go to cafe and expect tons of babes to start taking interest in me - yes it looks that good.

Safari also fails the test, not that it surprises me.

A little surprising is that Amaya also fails...

Isn't this basically the definition of geek?

I don't know. I know that a cute dog or perhaps a car would be far more effective than OS, but I notice people posting how they perceive chicks taking interest in their laptops.

If Safari fails then KHTML will definitely fail, since the former uses an enhancement of latter.

As much as I'd like to see better support for CSS, I'd much rather see better support for all the current specs - including a revamping of CSS so that it makes sense from a design perspective rather than from that of a coder. That alone would increase the usage of CSS, but alas it's likely a pipe-dream because the W3C is more concerned with rolling out new standards that conflict with what most web developers really want (evident in the W3C's new standard for web forms versus that coming from the web development community).

So, what would you like (give examples)?

Multiple background images for elements that can have different alignments? Pixel-perfect cross-browser positioning? Vertical centering in the viewport?

Don't know about the other browsers, but Dave Hyatt is making sure Safari renders the Acid2 test page correctly...

Dave has Safari passing all but one portion of the Acid2 test now - the portion that deals with the behavior of the object element. Wonder where the other browser devs are at with this, especially Opera given a certain developer's involvement...

Opera 8 does not render the Acid2 test well at all. Opera employees don't think Opera 8.1 will either. The test was ensured one day after feature freeze, when Opera 8 was in bug fixing only stage; they didn't want to delay it any longer (which was the right decision IMHO). They've made clear they don't see this as a race but rather as a mid-term goal and as a marketing vehicle for all alternative browsers against IE (or, should MS surprise us all, a marketing opportunity for them).

BTW, I think it's really impressive how just one guy can fix so many things in Safari in just a few days.

Dave has run into a few issues with rendering, but, according to him, there is possibly a problem with test itself. He has halted work on Acid2 until the bug can be verified and corrected.

It is somewhat interesting that since no browser renders the test correctly, it's impossible to actually verify that the test itself is correct. Sure there are the specs, but even those can be contradictory or unclear.

Sorry, almost forgot, here's a link:
