Do you feel that video game makers should be held responsible for the violent acts a person does after playing their video game?

Yes of course. Let's further this nation's (and maybe even the world's) increasing insistence on putting off responsibility for one's own actions.

Seriously though, this issue has been raised before with movies, music, books, and even video games previously.

held responsible? for an individuals bad choices and lack of morality? for not protecting everyone from the evils of the real world? for the individual not having the ability to discern reality from a video game?

i don't see that there is anything for them to be held responsible for. they are not telling children to run around and shoot their classmates. no one is.

if pretend violence is not acceptable than children should not be allowed to play out games of cowboys and indians or play war.

After a whole weekend playing Civilization II, I went on a bloodstained rampage and exterminated the entire Carpathian empire!

Maybe game makers should be held responsible for increasing the general level of xenophobia. I mean, is it fair to all those aliens to be hated so?

I was tempted to vote yes but then some tw*t would read this thread and say that 5% of the internet believe games are evil.

Hold parents responsible for kids action until whatever age is appropriate, after that, it is all up to the individual .. don't push the blame on someone else..

So is Mark Twain responsible for people using the word "nigger"?

Perhaps Shakespeare is responsible for all the world's suicides, since just about everyone has read Hamlet?

When will it stop? It's a slippery slope, and while you might find a game where you play a psychotic killer to be morally reprehensible, it's not such a far cry from there to taking all the James Bond films off the shelves of video stores because some nutbag decided to play "spies" and shoot some people.

I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
                I would still get screwed

Agreed. Though I find Romeo and Juliet far more suicide inducing than Hamlet.

I think that this would be a none issue if parents took the time to understand the video gaming world and be r*****sible for their kids ... oops, I said the 'R' word. Better bleep that out.

This is a good article about video game myths (I love PBS):

Should a blacksmith be held responsible if someone uses the knife he made to kill someone?
Should car manufacturers be held responsible if someone uses their car to run over people?
Should the MURC admin be held responsible if Zokes spends too much time on MURC and not enough time working?
Should Einstein be held responsible for all those who died from an atomic bomb?
