  • Akbar gets death penalty

Hours after giving a brief, barely audible apology, a soldier was sentenced to death by a military jury for attacking comrades with a rifle and grenades early in the Iraq invasion.

IMHO, this guy deserves to die.
Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

I'm just disappointed he'll die by lethal injection. That's too kind IMO. In my perfect world he'd be tied to a post in a tent then have a grenade thrown in with him.

Let him sit there watching that fuse burn down the last second or so, just like his victims

I guess his loyality to his religon was stronger than his loyality to the US.
Still if the Army didn't take any Muslims to iraq the outcry would have been huge.
Sad to see the racist card was played again to try and justify it.

he's a chickenshit mother****er who chose to kill two members of his command staff because he disagreed with them. he tried to hide behind being "mentally ill" despite the fact it was quite calculated and he was in a solid state of mind at the time. he tried to hide behind his supposed religious beliefs as an excuse to kill two people. also, about a month ago he attacked an MP after "reappropriating" a pair of scissors and asking to use the latrine. this lasted until a second MP entered the latrine, noticed the scuffle and then proceeded to beat his ass down. word is the MP got stabbed in the neck/shoulder area, but otherwise is alright.

the dude deserves worse than a leathal injection. he is a Grade A shitburgler and deserves to have the life stomped out of him.

Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?

Have you ever read the original Casino Royale by Ian Fleming? I don't think I could really come up with many worse tortures than Bond goes through there. Such things should be reserved specifically for people like this Mr Akbar.

I think lethal injection is pretty damn horrific enough.
Once the needle penetrates your skin, you know, that's it mate.
And you don't know how long it will take, what it will be like, will it hurt, etc.

teach mankind not to kill by killing mankind....

But! this is not for me to decide....so I'll just join the crowds!

                      Die you TK'er!

Aside from knowing once the needle is in that it's over, lethal injection is perhaps the most humane way to execute.

Lethal injections take about 15-30 minutes with most of this time devoted to strapping them to the table, reading the death warrant, taking a last statement (if any) and doing the venipuncture. Once the puncture is done things go very fast.

The first thing they inject is an anesthetic, usually sodium pentothal. For pre-surgery purposes pentothals dose is 100 to 150 mg of pentothal delivered over 10 seconds or so, but for executions they use up to 5,000 mg.

Obviously it's lights-out in very short order.

Now a saline (salt water) solution is used to flush the line. Otherwise the pentothal could chemically react with the next drug and clog the IV line.

Only after the flushing is done is a paralytic injected, usually Pavulon or succinylcholine chloride, to stop respiration. In surgeries Pavulon is given at a dose of 40 to 100 micrograms/kg of body weight. In executions this is upped to as much as 100 milligrams

Again the IV line is flushed with saline to prevent the line from clogging.

Next in most states is a massive does of potassium chloride which short-circuits cardiac signaling, stopping the heart.

One his excuses was that he had racial and religous abuse before hand.

He had also been sent to kill his own "Brothers" The religous bonding is considerably stronger than in Christianity. So he's breaking his own loyalty in a sense.

I presume he could have raised this as an objection before being sent out there.

If I was in that Unit I would have shot him anyway to be honest striaght after the event.

Of course with New Scientist editorial position being anti-death penalty we can assume their take on it is absolutely neutral, right?

I'll admit that in the early days of lethal injection things didn't always go perfectly, but that doesn't mean this is how things go now.

There are also problems with people who are long term drug addicts; in that their superficial veins are usually blown and they require a cutdown to get to deeper ones.

That said it's still far better IMO than hanging (gotta get that knot & the rope length vs. weight ratio right), the garrot (strangulation), the guillotine (head can stay concious for too long) or electrocution in old devices (high electrical resitance in the skull cap).

Perhaps the tried and true Russian method of putting a flat-headed bullet into the back of the SOB's skull is best after all.

In any case; I for one am perfectly willing to accept some discomfort or pain in executions since these SOB's didn't seem to care about same when they killed their victims.
