How do you get gangrene from breaking your leg unless the bone is exposed?

As a guess, I would say the blood flow to the lower leg was cut off - pinched vein/artery. with the heat in egypt, it would be easy to see it turning bad quickly.

Yup. Vascular compromise can easily turn into a gangrene.
