I've only deleted a few shots but I'll probably start cleaning out some of my saved photos when I get around to doing more with them. Does the counter continue to increment even though you delete the last image on the camera? I can try this out myself quick enough. I guess you're saying that you delete on-camera and the counter does always increment regardless.
Yeah the counter will always increment regardless of what you do to the images after you've taken them, unless you enable the file counter reset option in the menu.

It also probably weighs five times as much. Every gram counts when I go backpacking. I wish they had a camera battery that would last me the entire four-day trip.
The case doesn't weigh much at all. The leather is pretty thin and there's not much padding. You could say it's just a second skin for the camera. It provides pretty minimal protection. It is convenient though - I don't have to fumble around when I need to get my camera out in a hurry. I agree that the battery life isn't spectacular, but usually I don't need my second battery unless I plan on taking pictures all day.

That reminds me that I still need to pick up a second battery before my backpacking trip. I'm usually able to get a charge on the battery when I'm out of the house. I've gotten caught a couple times at family events with a dead battery and luckily I just grab one from my father who has an S30 and a couple batteries. One of my fellow backpackers also has the S30 so it's handy to be able to swap CF cards and batteries. This was part of my rational for getting the S70, along with the fact that it was nearly the only lightweight manual camera with a wide-angle lens.
Maybe we should retitle this thread.

They are great to work with. You really notice the difference between a compact camera and an SLR when it comes to autofocus, exposure, more natural controls, ...
They do have a downside: wheight and bulkiness... In that aspect, the Nikon D50, D70 and the Canon 350D are about the same, all the other models (Canon Eos20D, Nikon D100) are bigger and heavier. (I won't even mention the professional models... )
And if you then have some high quality lenses, you must realize you are carrying a couple of kilograms...
