  • Frank Gorshin, TV's Riddler, dies....

    of lung cancer at 72;

    Was there ever anyone better suited to playing The Riddler?

    Jim Carrey was good, but Frank Gorshin was better.

    And who can ever forget his appearance in the classic Trek episode "Let This Be Your Final Battle", which showed how racism scars both sides.

    This is the where where the only two survivors of a planet-wide race war continue their battle on the Enterprise.

    Their racial "difference": their coloration is black on one side and white on the other, with one survivor being black on the right and the other being black on the left.

    A classic IMO.

    I saw the news earlier. His last performance will be on tomorrow's CSI (never watched the show). I haven't seen Mr. Gorshin perform in ages but I was always amazed by his energy and creativity. I recognized him from before when he started showing up on the old Batman series but I don't recall where I saw him. I'll have to check his videography to see what he did before Batman.

      His early work included lots of standup routines on TV, but mainly on the Ed Sullivan show. After Batman, and especially after he garnered an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of The Riddler, his career took off.

        I checked IMDB yesterday and I think I recognized him from one or more of the following films:
        • "Where the Boys Are"
        • "The George Raft Story"
        • "That Darn Cat!"

        and maybe, but less likely due to his minor roles ...
        • "The True Story of Jesse James"
        • "Invasion of the Saucer Men"

          I've always thought of him as a stand up.
          Just the Riddler as an aside.
