My brother tells me that the dude that got sucked into the jet intake actually lived, with hardly any injuries. Part of his vest caught on the edge of the intake, stopped him just before he got to the nasty part. His helmet came off and blew up the engine. Don't know if it's true, but if it is, he's one lucky bastard.

There's a differnce between being out right stupid and not being a pansy. My brother is a skater, has been for a decade before skating was the kool thing to do, so I know from experience. He's a bright guy, but put him or any of their friends on a skateboard or BMX and their IQ drops by 100 points and common sense stays at the door.

My brother isn't a poser. He's been skating since the 80's, when most people still didn't know who Tony Hawk was. Back in the day when skaters were thought to be nothing more than a bunch of punk ass troublemaking kids and got chased off of every property they got near. He's no Tony Hawk, but he can skate. I would put him well above average, but slightly under pro.

The only way to become good is to do what you call 'stupid' tricks. Look at Tony Hawk, betcha he bailed pretty hard on some of the tricks he tried and we all know that if you don't try you'll never become any good. Betcha people like you called him stupid too, at first.
There's a difference between pulling off a well planned move and being dumb as a box of rocks. Tony Hawk and the pros didn't get good by being a bunch of dumbasses. They plan out all of their new moves and practice them to death under the right conditions. They don't skate/bike down roofs onto the side of a hill filled with concrete steps and iron hand rails. Or make a jump unless they are certain they can go the distance, because they've practiced it out before hand. In other words, the pros don't bite off more than they can chew. There is a high degree of fearlessness involved, absolutely, but most people try to be a Tony Hawk before they they can even pull off a decent ollie. And if they want to do a cool new dangerous stunt, they are well prepared for it first, unlike many of the people in videos like this.

The big difference between pro skaters and posers is how far your willing to go to pull off a trick, it has NOTHING to do with intelligence cause they know damn well that the tricks they try can end up in disaster. It's all about fear, which is why I'm not all that great a skater because I'm too scared (or "pansy" if you wish) to try anything big.
The difference between a poser and a pro is not how far you are willing to go. The difference is a poser does it to look cool, or it's the "in" thing to do. A pro does it because he 1) has passion for it, 2) practices hard at it, and 3) is physically and mentally capable of pulling it off. Any dumbass can attempt to pull off a 900. Only a pro can pull it off.

Granted the BMX'er (and the only BMX'er in the video, btw) wasn't very smart, the first guy on rollerblades miscalculated his landing, the second one tried a trick that's way out of his league (or so it seems) and the only skater in the video... well his was just plain funny.
...which proves my point more than yours.

Having workeed in a big-city emergency room and been on 24 hour/5 days a week emergency call for >25 years much of this stuff looks rather tame. Why? Because most big-city emergency rooms are more like M.A.S.H. units than anything else.

I could tell tales that would curl your toenails

Short example: one night many years ago they asked for volunteers to perform surgery in our parking lot!!

                      Why?

Because some morons got hold of a grenade launcher of some kind (M-72 maybe, but we were never told) that was stolen from an armory. Somehow they set if off and it ended up in the abdomen of one of the guys without exploding. Wonderful..

The squad brought him to us in a 5 mph convoy with military and city police escorts the whole way. Once there they asked us to (somehow) remove the damned thing under the guidance of x-ray and a munitions expert.

No robots in those days kiddies, so they asked for unmarried volunteers. Guess who was the only unmarried radiology person on duty? Sheeshh.....

We used battery powered x-ray & surgical equipment and a lot of patience, but eventually got it out. Once extracted it was photographed for evidence then exploded by the munitions guy in an open lot on the hospital grounds.

Why our hospital? It was the officially designated disaster HQ for the whole area, had the battery powered gear and was the only govt. hospital with large enough open grounds (>200 acres) to do the disposal on the spot.

Funny thing is it never made the news. Wonder why?

Then there were the gunfights in our ER and radiology departments, but those are whole other stories.

If you're smart you CAN be a better skater than the rest. I was very clear on the distinction.

Well of course if you pratice doing a trick a hundred times before actually being filmed your not gonna look like a dumbass doing it. There's also the fact that not everyone has access to a skate park and not everyone lives in a place where it's nice out all year long. Tony Hawk is from California, which is practically the birthplace of skateboarding, no wonder he's a pro.
FYI, there were no good skate parks anywhere until Tony Hawk came along. You skated in empty swimming pools and large sewer pipes. There were skate parks in CA, sure, but back then if you had a 10 ft. half pipe it was considered amazing. I know, I went to skating tournaments with my bro when skating was on the fringe between punk and cool. I was in the town meeting when our city approved a skate park (in Kansas, the the early 90's no less). And when my bro came to town last week he was excited that KC finally had a good skate park after ... 10+ years of building them and a dozen mediocre to crappy attmepts.

False. You think Tony was certain he could pull off a 900? Don't think so, the only way to know is to actually try it. He bailed 2-3 times before actually succeeding the trick and it's not like he was able to do it again and again, took him a while before he could master it.
I think mentally he knew he could pull it off. He bailed 2-3 times on camera, but had practiced the 900 for weeks before hand with hndreds of failures. He knew he was close so he took the chance on camera and came out a bigger star than he already was. The 900 was not done on a whim.

You think the guy who invented the misty flip wasn't biting off more than he could chew? He probably came close to breaking his neck pulling this trick off.
What does that have to do with the arguement? You're commenting about a pro, pulling off a pro technique. I'm taking about non-pro's pretending to be pros becuase they have a board/roller blades/bike under their feet. Do you think that Ali Goulet pulled off the misty flip on a whim? Fearless or not, I bet he had a damn plan in his head that was more logical than, "try not to land on your head."

Of course! The competition is so damned fierce that if you don't invent some crazy new trick then your a nobody, just like 99.9999% of all the skaters out there.
Inventing new tricks is cool. Inventing new ways to cause bodily harm to yourself is not ... unless your a masochist. Once again you are failing to see my arguement about pro versus non-pro. I.E. smart and fearless versus dumb and fearless. That 0.0001% of skaters with enough know-how to not only be fearless, but smart enough, and physically capable of, pulling off tricks like the misty flip.

Riiiiight. Misty flip, enough said. (a little side note: most pro skaters don't wear any protection, which makes you wonder how smart they really are when pulling off these tricks)
Er....do you seriously think that I don't know anything about the skater world? Have you not caught on that my brother has been a hardcore skater for over 15 years?

Not quite. The only point you've made so far is that the people in the video haven't practiced any of the tricks they did.
No, I've established that I know a thing or two about the skater world and that you are freaking out because you think I'm just another dumb outsider attacking one of your favorite hobbies. I won't claim to be hardcore, or to have even followed the skater/BMX world since the late-90's, but I'm not completely out of the loop. There are skateboarders everywhere around here. There are about a dozen skate parks within a 50 miles radius of my house, if not more. My brother still skates hardcore and I talk to him about it a lot. I watch tourneys and competitions on TV if I stumble across them. I'm not ignorant to the skating world. I have observed the modern skating world since its infancy. I was always too big to skate, so I never personally got into it as much as other people, but the sport fasinates me all the same. And one of the only things that has not changed in the past 15+ years is the mentality of skaters.

There have always been three type of skater:

                          1) the pro - someone who is damn good at skating and has the facilities, both mentally and physically, to pull off big air and killer stunts. These make up your 0.0001% of the skater population.

                          2) Hardcore - People who eat, drink and sleep skating. They are good, and can pull off some sweet moves, but lack something that allows them to go pro. This makes up about 10% of skaters.

                          3) The Poser, as the they have been coined since the 80's - Those who do it because it's cool, or in , or popular, or to belong to something, or to rebel against [insert commonly rebeled against person/organization here]. This 89.9999% of the skater population is where the problem comes in. If it was just a >5% margin you could shrug it off, but it's the dominate share of skaters. It is here that we meet the people that act like pros, but have nowhere near the ability to be one for some reason or another. These are the ones that skate around and think they are cool because they can ollie and grind, and then try to pull of some insane stunt and nearly kill (or in some cases do) themselves. The posers have that mentality whuch makes the average joe hate skaters. And it's because there are so few people that know a hardcore or pro skater that skaters get a bad rap. These are the people that usually show up in videos like this (you can always tell when it's a pro, hardcore, or poser wiping out by the way they crash and the people's reactions), these are the ones I'm talking about, and this is, whether you will admit it or not, the majority of skaters!
