I loved their rebuttal. If "the problem is real and needs no exaggeration", why did they exaggerate it?

By their calculation, people with Linux (and all that Linux equivalent software that Sasq listed before) count as pirates. People with free video players like Real and Quicktime are pirates. Anything freeware or open source counts as pirated to them because it's one less sale made by the software industry.

Jeebus, I'm glad they didn't try to exagerate the issue.

"The implication that an industry would purposely inflate the rate of piracy and its impact to suit its political aims is ridiculous."

Of course, their aims are financial.

Geee I'm glad they don't work for the MPAA/RIAA. Who knows how many TRILLIONS of dollars that industry would lose to piracy!!!

I'm pretty sure the MPAA/RIAA use a similar methodology (sic) to establish damages due to piracy.

No, it's waaaay more conservative. I don't know, if you base the normal CD buyer's habit on me and my friends' collections, relatively speaking, you're all a bunch of thieves! It's not trillions anymore, but GAZILLIONS! There's no such thing as free music anyway!

Anyway, they're just a bunch of liars/thieves. Author's rights are pennies with respect to what the producers pocket. They don't give a damn about the authors and DVD sales are so huge they can't claim to be losing money on them.

Yeah I mean shit - if you figure that EVERYONE has the 500+CD's and 200+DVD's that Julie and I do... then EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY is stealing HUNDREDS OF CD'S A YEAR!
The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

If only life were as easy as you
I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
              I would still get screwed

BSA is also used by their members as a tool to harass companies that don’t obey

In 2002 MS wanted to buy the Swedish game developer Mindark, Mindark refused.

Some weeks later BSA raided them....

                Ofcourse BSA didn’t find anything.

In 2004 the charges was dropped due to lack of evidence.

But it had still had the desired effect of hurting Mindark really bad.

                BSA, Really nice guys….

BSA?! I though Boy Scouts was all about camping and such. I suppose they're sending the Sea Scouts to go after pirates.

Here's an interesting developing story about a recent MPAA/RIAA raid on a DVD plant:

It gets really interesting in paragraph 4 were the company they raided responds to the allegations.

Note how they explain their math for calculating the $30 million of pirate material in the end of the article. It's ridiculous all right!

"The $30 million estimated loss figure associated with this raid, provided in MPAA's June 20 press release, represents an estimate of the value of the DVDs seized during that raid and the value of the pirated DVDs that could be produced using the DVD stampers seized by law enforcement authorities during the raid."
That's like saying because my DVD burner has a 10,000 hour manufacture lifetime estimate, and I can burn 1 DVD every 10 minutes, that if it was siezed by the MPAA they prevented $1.2 million in illegal sales.

                        Yeah, great math there.
