  • Montreal: Car Theif Captial?

Do any of my fellow MURC'ers live near Montreal? Reason I ask is that I had a friend go up there for the weekend for Softball Tournment. He went out to dinner with friends Friday night and when get got back from eatting...his 2004 F-350 pickup was gone! In addition 2 Caddalic Escaldes where stolen right next to each other From Six Flags Montreal.

I feel bad for him since he was starting his own handyman business in the next few weeks and his truck and all of his tools where jacked on him. I hope his insurance takes care of him.
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

That sucks. Even if his insurance takes care of him, there's no way to avoid a premium increase.
    P.S. You've been Spanked!

I've quit visiting Montreal (and Quebec in general) after having our car vandalized several times by rampaging teens and normal-looking "adults".

Our "crime"? Having a US flag sticker on the rear window, and this started happening long before the current animosities.

IMO that whole part of Canada can go straight to you-know-where and fry.

Yeah Doc, that's too bad. Quebecois culture and attitude isn't necessarily the most respected among the provinces.

This reminds me of a question I've long pondered...

It's really common for Canadian kids to travel throughout Europe after High School and during their University years. It's also common for them to sew a Maple Leaf onto their backpack so that strangers see they are Canadian and not American.

I always wondered what American kids did. Do American's sew an Old Glory patch on their backpacks? Or do they avoid potential conflict by attempting to stay anonymous?

Please understand, I'm not in the least bit suggesting that Americans have any legitimate reason to hide their identity, etc. I'm just wondering.

I think the situation might be a little bit analogous to Jewish kids travelling in Europe. We're advised not to wear kippas in public unless we know we're in a safe neighbourhood. I don't wear a kippa myself. Technically you're only supposed to wear one when you pray, but I know I wouldn't feel comfortable walking around with one on my head if I wasn't with a fairly large group of co-religionists.

When I traveled through Europe in the '70's I had flag patches on my backpack and gear and actually had older people come up and thank me for our efforts during WWII. A very few kids would make comments about 'nam, but not as many as you would think. Later on in the '80's things were pretty much the same. Can't speak of now since it's been about 18 years since I was in Europe.

IMO it was various French politicians that poisoned the well as far as treatment of Americans in Europe goes, and Chriac is doing the same today mainly for the sake of domestic and EU politics. It's not like meddling in the affairs of others is something the French don't do at least as often as we do and Schroeder is just being his lapdog.

I live near Montreal. I parked my car on René-Levesque street and when I came back my car was also gone. Did he check with the police? They have a tendancy to tow cars that are illegally parked to a different street.

Anything to bash Canadians or the French Canadians eh Doc?

I have no problem with anywhere or anyone in Canada but Quebec. Our treatment there, both the car issue and how they tend to treat non-Francophones to begin with, left a very sour taste in our mouths.

That said I do, however, feel that extra mental health bennies should be allocated to those pols working in Ottawa

Sorry I didn't reply yesterday to this, was a tad busy.

But yeah, I know exactly how you feel.

It's all about the language, they seem to beleive that if too many english people come and visit then they will suddenly lose their culture.

@KvH: Every hardcore francophone I meet, (especially those who are against everything english) I tell them I speak english too and that I'm born in Alberta, even though I have a very french name and that I live in Quebec. They get embarassed and feel bad, and some even realise how stupid they react to the whole french thing, and EVEN on rare occasions some change their minds about the way they thought before.
