Actually, come to think of it. I've heard of certain sects of Jews who do not relieve themselves on the Sabbath.

I guess it all comes down to interpretation.

That Rabbi I spoke with also agreed with me that in general, kosher rules were created to be much stricter than what is set out in the Torah. He said that the Rabbis intentionally made the rules tougher because the rules of the Torah are too easy to break by accident. Kosher rules are much clearer, and if you make a mistake, it's not really such a big deal.

Also, it's very important to note that doctor's advice overrules normal kosher laws. If for example, your doctor tells you that you have to eat something that is otherwise not kosher, you are breaking the rules if you don't eat it. It is of course preferred if the doctor is himself Jewish and understands the implications, but the important point to understand is that your doctors advice overrules your Rabbi’s.
    P.S. You've been Spanked!

I would be very surprised (or even discussed...disguised...dammit how it is written? ) if it would be other way around. And btw, the same thing is true in catholicism. Which doesn't mean there are no stupid people... For example, apart from "don't eat meat in friday" (which you don't have to obey if for example for medical reasons) there's also "no food and drinks other than water ~1 hour before communion". Which isn't a big deal btw, since communion is, I don't know (uhmm...remember? ), 30 or 40 minutes in the mass, adding to that time you walk/drive to church makes the whole thing no problem at all. But here it was, this god-fearing very old sick woman, which couldn't walk to church, so the priest was comming to her. And also to others that want communion but can't go to church; starting in the morning. So she didn't know exactly when he'll come. So she hadn't eaten/taken medicines until noon . Luckily the priest found out and spoke something among the lines "fvck this rule, you have to eat & take medicines". But I wonder how often such things happen...(also regarding kosher)

It's all a bit like Asimov's yeast farms on Trantor isn't it?

This issue reminds me a great deal of Oryx and Crake. A fun read.
