What's there to do in PEI?

My first vacation in 4 years!

I'm heading out there on a road trip with my good buddy from High School who's flying in from Hong Kong to take care of some family business (later in the month).

Neither one of us has been out East before.

We chose PEI because it's small and we'll only be out there for a few days.

Anyone been? Got any advice on places that we MUST visit? Restaurants? I'm a foodie, but I don't eat shellfish and I'm on a low carb diet so no potatoes either... D'uh!

It's not a kosher thing. Shellfish are the insects of the underwater world. I don't eat cockroaches either.

stop in Quebec City on the way, stay for a dayor so, lots to do and see - Just don't stay at the Chateau Frontenac (almost $400 a night).

PEI been there: very flat, lots of potato farms , there are plenty of beaches - and the water is fairly warm. We stayed near Cavindish which had plenty of family oriented attractions, but as for the rest of PEI, can't say much. We were at a couple of restaurants in Cavendish, but confined ourselves to family type establishments as both of my daughters where still very young - neither one was anything outstanding.
For something different take the bridge one way to the island and the ferry back - the price is the same.
Oh, and if you are going to a beach, wear clothes that you don't mind being dyed red - there is plenty of iron oxide in the sand and it can stain your clothes

Rodneys is considered by many to be the best Oyster place in Toronto. They happen to serve many things from PEI.

Shell fish are arthropods from which insects probably developed from(not into). if anyhting they are closer to spiders

But you are really missing out, shellfish are the tastiest and probably close the highest quality protein on the planet.

Feel free to indulge in your steroid laden cows and antibiotic laden chickens full of sallmonella , and leave all the free range "insects of the sea" to me....yum

It is estimated that the average person eats 8 spiders in their lifetime - while they're sleeping!

From the above, I assume shellfish = lobsters, crabs, shrimps etc. What about oysters, mussels, clams etc., the real shellfish? They are hardly related to arthropods. I admit I love the former but I'm not keen on the latter, as a rule. Exception: clam chowder at a harbour-side place in Boston, mmmmmmmmm! I also like octopus, squids, calamaries and suchlike provided they are cooked well (i.e., not long enough to emulate a Dunlop tyre).

Anyway, there must surely be some conventional vertebrate fish????

I don't know whether there is an equivalent in PEI, but my favourite fish dish is bouillabaisse, which is made with 5-8 kinds of vertebrate fish and the genuine article contains no shellfish of any description (this is a recent modification to capture tourists). It should be served with toasted slices of baguette and a good, spicy, rouille.

Remember that it is free to drive across the bridge to PEI, but it costs $40 or so to leave .. this is what my sister told me when she visited 3 years ago.
also, since this is a road trip.. I did the same trip ( well I went all the way to St. Johns ) I never saw as many speed traps as in Quebec.. as in 3 seperate traps on the highway within 15 minutes of driving.
the highway outside of Quebec city, and all the way to NB is pretty boring.. fields, trees, st. laurence.. nothing to see.. can easily be driven at night without missing anything.
Also, stay on the Trans Canada Highway.. in NB there is a road which looks faster on the map, BUT it is gravel a fair bit of the way, unless it has been fixed.. stick to the trans canada.. it also has a 110 km/h limit and moose fencing
Fredricton is on the way, which I spend a few days in ( not because of the city as much as one girl who lived there ) .. it is not terribly exciting.. it is a university town, but nothing much to see there that I noticed. Since you are out that way anyways, take the detour and visit bay of fundy to see the worlds highest tide.. and if PEI really bores you, you are only a few hours drive from Halifax..Home of the worlds largest non nuclear explosion

Even though you will not eat it, Lobsters seem to be the big thing they are trying to sell to tourists out there.. not that it comes as a surprise

If you do get to stop in QC
Stay here.
Handy location and very picturesque.
We stayed there about 10 years ago.
It was great.
They serve coffee in big bowls with plenty of cream!
