Ok, we can discuss it here, without fear of offending anyone.

I suppose some characters had to die considering the shit they were pulling with only a bolted on cannon as armament which was added partway through the show. I wanted to send flowers when Wash died if only for a second. He did at least get to die a hero just pulling off one hell of an orbital decent after having flown through a storm of ships and weapon fire.

Yeah. Methinks that Alan Tudyk just wanted out of the series, he's had a lot of work since Firefly got cancelled - he's currently in Spamalot on Broadway, he did "Into the West", and was the Robot in "I, Robot"... and let's not forget that he was Steve the Pirate in "Dodgeball".

As for Shepherd Book... c'mon. I can't see Ron Glass being THAT busy. Plus Joss has said that the avenues of exploring Book's past "aren't shut yet". Grr...

I discussed it with my brother, though, and we think that in a future setting we might see The Operative as a shepherd. That's my best guess as to who/what Book was. Remember that Jubal Early said "that's no shepherd!" about him.

Overall though, I loved the film. I think that it DID wrap things up a BIT to completely for River in one way, but not at all in another way. She has MORE problems than just "other people's memories". She never had flashbacks of Reavers at all in the series. Bleh. And now we're supposed to believe that she's just "much better"? Better enough to fly a ship? Bleh.

But that's my only niggle. Well, that and the fact that they changed the backstory of how Simon rescued her. In the series some people smuggled her out and he got her in stasis. Hrm.

Anyway, there were some awesome bits.

      "This could get interesting."
      "Define interesting."
"Oh God, Oh God, we're all going to die?"

I also liked the fact that they left the dinosaur toys on the console, sort of a tribute to Wash.

You know it's rather sad that the Sci-Fi channel isn't able to pickup the series beyond just showing reruns; they've done rather well with the Stargate shows and Battlestar Galactica, nevermind how much cash they dump into those B-movies of theirs.

There is a lot that could have been better explored in a continuing series rather than in possible sequels to the movie.

I don't think they were flashbacks as much as they were mixes of impressions of current circumstances with her memories, her fears and other people's memories. Whenever she would have them, the Reavers would be nearby, on their way or the crew would be in an area where something had happened. One time the teacher in her "vision" told her to lie down and she would not. She was thinking she was like a Reaver because of what the Alliance had done to her.

Anyone get the comment she makes very early on where the Reaver is newly dead in the ships cargo bay and she says "They didn't lie down." I did not get that until I watched it a second time.

              Also:
As for River being the pilot. She flew the ship with Mal right there. That does not mean that she is the pilot for certain just that she can. The only other person currently on board that might have the capability to fly the ship would be Inara and that would be a way for her to stay on the ship without whoring around to make money.

No my point was that she could hardly be considered mentally well enough to fly.

It's more complex than that. The whole "companion" concept is FAR more complex than just "spread for money".

The problem is contractual. As I understand it, there's a moratorium on producing new shows until 2008 or something like that, unless those shows are produced by Fox.

Ahh. Even if the programming no longer has control of her, the sudden appearance of a ship full of reavers could send her into fits when the crew needed her the most.

Just a random thought of mine.

Amazing movie. I wonder how many fans are going to be mad at Whedon for killing off two very interesting characters. I'll miss them but at least he treated the subject well for both. I am thankful though that I waited to look in this thread until after i saw the movie last night :P

Spoiler! You want a spoiler! How 'bout the first 9 minutes from Vivendi themselves?

                            http://video.vividas.com/CDN1/3929_S...web/index.html

It does require you to allow an applet to be used and it does not seem to work with Firefox.

Never saw the series that it was apparently based on, but I saw the movie last night with some friends.

It seemed ok, but I wasn't overly impressed with the storyline.
