  • What's up with movies this year?

I can count on one hand how many good movies were released this year thus far, and ones that will be released soon.

But this new selection of trailers definetly kicks the bucket!!

    What's going on here?

OK, I am an action and drama freak so this is from my perspective

You aren't alone. The movie studios are all "perplexed" as to why this year has been poor for movie attendance... but everyone ELSE can see it - there have been precious few good films this year.

Lets not forget to mention getting fleesed when you go see a movie ($30 bucks for tickets and popcorn isnt my idea of a good time, I can go out eat for nearly that much) and all the teenagers and rugrats running around the theater. My biggest pevee is my ass goes numb in the seats at the two local theaters near me after only sitting there an hour and I can't get confertible in the seats to start with...much rather watch a Movie at home on my 50 in DLP on my comfy couch.
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

I have been to the movie theater once this year, and that was to see Star Wars ep. III. I think the only other movie that got me out of the house, but I didn't watch because it wasn't at the theater I had free passes to, was Batman Begins.

Beyond that I would like to see Wallace & Grommit and Cars. And that's pretty much it. Harry Pothead can wait for DVD release. And that's just about it.

Batman Begins was the best thing I saw this year...some other ones were mildly entertaining, I'd say two worth mentioning are The Brothers Grimm and Kingdom of Heaven, but yeah, overall, not a good year

            We want to see...

            Wallace and Grommit
Cars - hey wait isn't that NEXT year?
            Chicken Little
            Harry Potter
            Narnia

And probably a few others. We won't get to, though, because of the baby.

On the other hand, Julie and I are big moviegoers.

Most of the action movies I'd like to see in the theatre, just on the basis that my home theatre just isn't as snazzy as what some people have

Everything else can wait till it comes out on DVD as far as I'm concerned, and honestly, I doubt I'll see that many of even the decent looking action flicks. Serenity is on the top of the list.

Ah good. Had wanted to see Batman Begins but life conspired against me, so definitely glad to see it coming out to DVD this fast.

Yes, the studios are FINALLY warming up to the idea that people want to get the DVD and don't want to wait for it.

They're also realizing - about 10 years after the trend started - that movies don't run for MONTHS any more, but rather for WEEKS.

the weeks thing annoys me to no end. "I'd like to see that movie... What it isn't playing anymore? %$#!%@"

and a movie showing for weeks doesn't allow for the sleeper hit. Hopefully they'll let Serenity play for awhile.

Well you can complain if you like, but the majority of the moviegoing public goes within the first several weeks of a movie's opening - or else doesn't care what they go see. That's just a market trend. People who say "I want to see Batman but I'm busy the next 4 weekends" are in the minority, according to market statistics. This causes theaters to pull the movies in favor of the next "must see opening weekend".

Serenity, we can only hope, will linger because of the nature of its fanbase and word-of-mouth. Instead of a 50 million dollar opening weekend followed by dismal 5 million dollar weeks, I predict that it'll do solid 10-million dollar weekends as long as it is left in theaters.

There's also been a trend of rereleasing films back into the cinema, in effect extending their run, when they appear to be a said sleeper hit. And hey, there's always the $1... no, $1.50... err, I mean $2 theatre

I've seen SW EP3 and Madagascar, both of which were with the family (well, only Dillan on SW). It's a little hard to see more adult fare when you have two, well now three, kids and your budget leans more to practical expenditures.
