    There is a real underlying problem here that pet-lovers do not always recognise. If an animal shelter has room for, say, 50 animals in reasonable conditions and receives 20 per day and gives out 10 per day, something must give. Humane euthanasia is the only solution and the ones that go are those that are least likely to be adopted, the aggressive, old, mangey, sick, skinny or fat ones. Much as I dislike it, this is the only solution. Obviously, if the shelter is killing 10 animals/day, it has to dispose of the cadavers and this is often a BIG problem. Cremation is the best solution but outside the scope of small shelters. So, what to do? I think if you search any landfill, you will find hundreds of animal corpses. In the Canton (State) where I used to live in Switzerland, there was a strict law that all animal corpses had to be incinerated (burial even not an option) and the slaughter houses undertook it, for a fee. Even roadkill was shovelled up and burnt. As pets were easily identified in a police state, anyone caught dumping a cadaver in a plastic bag with the garbage was awarded a swingeing fine and this discouraged the practice. I think this is the only place I know where the problem was tackled well.

    In this particular case, it is difficult to comment. It would appear the animals were correctly euthanised, so I don't know where the cruelty comes in. The way they disposed of the cadavers was, of course, wrong but hardly cruel and possibly constituted a public health hazard. I suggest this case is probably only the tip of the iceberg, though.

    What does PETA mean?

      "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals"

      They're an animal rights group. Recently, their leadership compared the mass poultry industry to the Holocaust, and said it was just as bad.

      They don't distinguish between the rights of humans over the rights of animals.

      That's why it's so surprising that PETA workers would kill these animals.
      P.S. You've been Spanked!

        PETA headquarters itself has "euthanized" over 8,000 animals it was supposed to adopt out before even trying to, so it's no suprise here.

        All one has to do is listen to some of the speeches by its CEO and you just KNOW there are some screws loose.....not to mention their support of the ALF (animal liberation front).

        ALF is a known eco-terrorism group that's burned, bombed and otherwise vandalized many locations here in the US including labs at the University of Michigan.

          PETA = craaaaaaazy!

          ...

          My wife works in drug research and has to deal with these people ALL THE TIME. Their grasp on reality is tenuous at best. They honestly believe some of the garbage rhetoric they spew, and have no desire to actually find out the truth or educate themselves on how animals are actually being treated. Their propaganda is all straight from the 50's when, admittedly, animals probably WERE mistreated on a routine basis. But that doesn't happen that way anymore, and they refuse to get with the times. Instead, they support groups that raid and vandalize labs, costing the pharmaceutical and research industry millions of dollars yearly... AND they let lab animals loose in the wild, YES LOOSE IN THE WOODS, even though they have never been outside before. It's kinda sad.

            I thought PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals. I'd join that org in a second!
            Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox
