  • LA to SF by train?

I was checking out the routes for getting from Los Angeles to San Francisco using Amtrak and came across an oddity: there is no direct train that goes from one city to the other, but apparently Emeryville and Oakland are close enough to it to be declared as SF destination stations...my question is, how close is close? For someone without a car arriving there at 10PM how would it be possible to get into San Francisco proper?

The BART services the airport / coliseum station, which is one of the Amtrak options. I'm not sure how far the two trains are from each other - I've never been to that station.

I'm not sure where the Amtrak station is in Oakland/Emeryville, but you should definitely be careful where you get off in those areas. Some areas aren't the best. and yes, BART is the way to get to SF without a vehicle. Here is the BART map:

If you don't have to take the train, consider driving Highway 1 - it's gorgeous!

Wish I could, but I can't (drive, that is)

In any case, I really like traveling by train...

The Coast Starlight is a nice train.
You will really enjoy the trip.
I don't know about bay area transit, but I'm sure you could get there.

Maybe an SF MURCer would give you a ride.
