  • Unconventional use of Jaws of life

Firefighters use Jaws of Life to free 647-lb. victim from bathroom
door. Ralph Sinclair, Chicago Sun 24-10-05
A FAT WOMAN who got stuck in a restaurant doorway was prodded with
forks wielded by her angry fellow diners.

Cops say the woman "squealed and suffered horribly" as a wild-eyed mob
jabbed her and hurled cruel insults, including calling her names like
"Miss Piggy" and "tub of lard" and taunting her with the childhood
rhyme, "Fatty, fatty, two by four, can't get through the bathroom door
    . . ."

"This unfortunate woman was poked and stabbed at least 200 times and
maybe even more," says a Chicago police spokesman, adding that he is
both embarrassed and saddened by the insensitivity of his fellow
    Chicagoans.

"The forks were plastic," he says, "but they still managed to inflict a
lot of damage. Doctors later told me the victim looked like a
    pincushion."

"Basically these people were upset that they couldn't use the rest
rooms. The woman was trapped in a doorway that leads to both the men's
    and ladies' toilets."

The 647-pound woman -- whose name editors are withholding to spare her
any further embarrassment -- "was in great distress before she was
freed," notes the cop, who says the ugly incident unfolded in a popular
barbecue restaurant known, ironically, for its Southern-style
    hospitality.

"The victim was squealing and crying in pain, not to mention being
humiliated, when police and firefighters arrived to help her. They
estimate that as many as 40 men and women had taken turns poking her
    with their forks."

Firefighters cut and pried the by-then exhausted woman free with saws,
crowbars and the Jaws of Life, a special tool usually reserved for
ripping open car doors to free passengers trapped in wreckage.

Get an amputation and everyone feels your pain. Become overweight and you're a big joke for those idiots who can't take out their frustrations on (most) ethnic groups anymore

Personally I find the whole thing revolting. I guess nobody thought that this poor woman could have feelings, much less that there are dozens of conditions that can cause weight gain....sometimes massive gains.

I'd probably have punched a few of 'em out just for being stupid, insensitive a**holes.

I'm still having a hard time imagining grown adults actually taking part in such a disgusting practice when they're not intoxicated. I'm guessing she was stuck heading into the restroom area and thus those who accosted her didn't have to look her in the eyes as they jabbed at her with their forks.

While I have my own opinion on overly obese people, Doc is right, there are a number of reasons that she could have been that heavy and it have been completely out of her control. Rather pathetic how our society is in regards to these things. Over the past seven years I've gone from a size 30 waist to a 38/40 (US measurement), and with that weight gain I've noticed a drastic difference in how people treat you and the assumptions they make about you. Though, if anyone tried to stick me with a fork I'd do just as Doc said, and the same if I'd been there to see them do it to this poor lady.

Is this really true? I couldn't find an article or an evidence that it existed.

Not looking real; the earliest article I can find was published in the Weekly World News way back in 2003

Can't find anything on Snopes, yet.

That is the lowest form of human behavior I have ever heard instead of helping the poor women, they attack her!
Doc, I would've taken gobs of lard and butter and shoved it down each and every one of those idiots throats until they gaged!!

First: this story doesnt really seem right. All other facts considered, the ability to feel plastic forks through 400 lbs of lard is highly unlikely.

But if this story is even half right, I cant help but to disagree.

Why in the world did this HUGE fat pig of a former human waddle into the restroom, when she was clearly not able to fit her fat frame through the opening?

Yes, I do feel sad for the persons that cant even manage their own weight. But come on!! When you weigh THIS much you would have to eat CONSTANTLY to not loose wieght. THis is not just 10 or 20 pounds too much. Its 400!! Maintaining such a weight would require the same dedication to eating that an olympic champion would have to his or her training.

Place her in a cage with plenty of water end some vitamins for a year...

It's the Weekly World News for crying out loud...aren't all their articles silly jokes? I remember the tons of features they had on Bat Boy, aliens helping Clinton out, Attila the Hun and Hitler being women, etc.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

What insensitive crap. Grow the f*** up.

Most people like this do NOT over-eat constantly. In fact their metabolism gets so out of whack, often from diabetes or other conditions including drug side effects, that they can gain weight on very small amounts of food. One medical article listed over 70 different conditions with potentially large weight gain as a side effect.

Besides diabetes where half of the cases are undiagnosed other conditions that can do this are menopause, depression (often made worse by people who think like DukeP ), hypothyroidism (rather common) and other endocrine disorders, inactivity due to other conditions (arthritis etc) etc. etc. etc.

Hell, even some medications can cause a 10 lb/month weight gain. Examples: Paxil & Zoloft (antidepressants), Depakote (seizures), Diabeta & Diabinase (diabetes) , Cardura & Inderal (blood pressure), Nexium & Prevacid (heartburn) and many others.

One way around this is to simply change meds to alternatives that are either weight neutral or can even induce weight loss. Problem is that these are often newer drugs without generic equivalents while the weight gainers are old with generic equivalents. Guess which most insurance and govt. programs push patients onto?

THanks I needed that (always find it a bit difficult to get in the PROPER christmas spirit)

I have never heard about medications, that cause people to swell 10 pounds a month - not for extended periods anyhow.

And even if this piglady was on your theoretical medication, we are still talking about 40 MONTHS!! Im QUITE certain that a real and proper doctor would have removed her from that medication LONG ago. I can hardly think of any nonlethal disease thats WORSE than gaining 400 pounds..

Oh. And on record: I plan to NEVER grow up.

                            Check the reedit for a list of some such meds. Here's a case study I found on WebMD;

Ditto for diabetes medications. "Yes, some can induce weight gain, but Glucophage and Precose are both weight-neutral, while two newer drugs -- Byetta and Symlin -- can actually help you lose weight," he says.

Note: of course those "new" meds don't have GEQ's and won't be prescribed without a fight.

As for medications used to treat seizure disorders and headaches, Aronne says that Zonegran and Topamax are good alternatives that are both associated with weight loss.

Aronne recalls the case of one 190-pound woman being treated for migraine headaches who came to his obesity clinic. His team tried a variety of measures, even a liquid diet, to help her shed the unhealthy excess weight, but she stabilized after losing only 10 pounds.

"Then we switched her to a different medication, Topamax, for her migraines," he recalls. "She lost 50 pounds and has stabilized at a healthy 133 pounds. I can offer dozens of more examples just like this."
Bottom line: a lot of people are like this woman, but don't get proper treatment or flatline after a small loss like she did. All too often they end up becoming morbidly obese, often weiging in at over 400 lbs.

Take that from someone who's worked in a large institution for many years (U of M system) and dealt with many such patients.

Yes, this lady was around 30% overweight due to her medications.

Piglady is 200% or more overweighty.

                              Theres really little comparison.
