Around here in the USA, the "age of consent" is 18. Great plan, except that when I went to college I was 16. So was my sophomore year girlfriend... and I wasn't "legal" when I started dating Julie, who at just over 2 years older than me was in fact committing statutory rape! Yeah a felony.

gurm is point on. changing the age of consent would largely hit teenagers, not other parts of the population. our rules are somewhat interesting - the age of consent is basically 18, but there is an interesting addition:

If the perpetrator is not more than three years older than the minor, the sexual act does not involve penetration with an object and the act does not result either in grievous bodily harm (under Section 84(1)) or the death of the minor, then the perpetrator under paragraphs 1 and 2 shall not be punished, unless the minor is under 13 years of age.

Age of consent is a totally arbitrary thing. Some people are more mature than others, and every relationship is different. Medically, when a person passes puberty, the mind is also mature enough to make the decision of whether to have sex or not. Whether that person does so in an intelligent manner is dependent upon their intelligence. Now, the way one of the quoted laws is written, if some 17yo guy wants to coerce a 14yo girl into having sex (get her drunk or use peer pressure or whatever), then that's absolutely fine. However, if a 14yo girl has a more mature and loving relationship with an 18yo guy, it's rape, and the witchunters who aren't allowed to hang "niggers" or "faggots" anymore go after these people. They are nothing but the hated du jour. And if the guy is 30? Is that person always a "predator?" Maybe those people are in love. Maybe he's respectful of her level of maturity as a result of that love. You can't just say he's a frothing-at-the-mouth rapist and murderer if that isn't the case, just like you can't say the 17yo isn't out for just some quick casual sex that will make the girl feel degraded and cause her to hate men for the rest of her life. There are a whole lot of things that are not even taken into account when you hand witchhunters a free torch like some of these laws are.

NO 14 year old, especially todays variety, is mature enough to give sexual consent. They have neither the life experience nor the judgement to make life changing decisions in any other part of their life (economics, drinking etc.) and this should be no different. Hell....they can't even drive.

The adult in the relationship is the one who should know better, and most often is manipulating an immature person for their own sexual gratification. Sick to say the least.

The term is "pederasty", and while accepted in ancient Greece and certain europeans & muslims it's a crime here and should be in any modern culture that values its children.

Manipulate my 14 y/0 daughter (back when I had one) in this manner and you'll be lucky to get away with jail time.

I am of a split mind about this topic.

While, as I indicated before, I feel that the 18-year-old age of consent is arbitrary and ridiculous... I also am in agreement with Doc.

Julie and I have discussed this a lot. It's not so bad with boys, but we've prepared ourselves: what if we had a girl?

You have to explain to teenagers, and it's not easy to do, that although they FEEL ready - and their bodies are technically "ripe" as it were... that there's NO SUCH THING as casual sex. ESPECIALLY not the first time or two or three. We as adults are exceptionally good (some of us, anyway) at separating emotion from the sex act, but as a teenager? You just can't. So if you do it with the wrong person, or too soon (or BOTH) you WILL regret it. Of course you just can't tell teenagers ANYTHING, now can you?

So how do you tell your kids that YES, sex is good. It is, in fact, great. Every bit as good as everyone always makes it out to be... IF you do it with the right person for the right reasons. And if not, it'll pretty much just disappoint you and screw you up a little bit more than you already are (all teenagers are a little bit screwed up, it's part of being a teenager).

It's hard. Unfortunately, age of consent laws are SELDOM based on helping out parents, or protecting society. They're mostly based on puritan beliefs and the ridiculous idea that the day you turn 18 you are somehow magically more mature than you were the night before.

And while we're on it, how retarded is it that the day you turn 18, you're somehow mature enough to choose your sexual partners... and get killed in the line of duty for your country... but NOT to drink alcoholic beverages?
