Welcome to Mars express: only a three hour trip

    IAN JOHNSTON SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT

AN EXTRAORDINARY "hyperspace" engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government.

The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based on a controversial theory about the fabric of the universe, could potentially allow a spacecraft to travel to Mars in three hours and journey to a star 11 light years away in just 80 days, according to a report in today's New Scientist magazine.

The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft.

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension.

The US air force has expressed an interest in the idea and scientists working for the American Department of Energy - which has a device known as the Z Machine that could generate the kind of magnetic fields required to drive the engine - say they may carry out a test if the theory withstands further scrutiny.
    Paper (true techies only):

That paper won the 2004 AIAA Best Paper award from the AIAA Nuclear and Future Flight Technical Committee. AIAA = American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

So, I hate to sound all conspiracy-minded and whatnot... but isn't this similar to what happened during the Philadelphia Experiment? Or rather "is reported to have happened"? Gigantic-ass Tesla coils generating HUGE magnetic fields and then whacky stuff happens?

      Fun with magnets.

It's too bad Tesla was driven off into hiding at the end of his life. He was greatest magnetic field scientist, and some would argue greatest inventor, ever. Oh well. In any event, producing the amount of power necessary to generate a magnetic field strong enough to put a spaceship into another dimension and moving it through space would be astronimocal. Don't see how they plan on getting around than minor detail.

If I'm reading their paper correctly they'd need a magnet with a strength of between 10 and 50 Torr to do a test of concept. Estimates put the strength of the Sandia Z-Machine at 60 Torr impulses.

And the paper seems to indicate the energy budget is small, so fields strengths and energy requirements are very realistic for a usable propulsion system.

The main thing stands out in my mind is that it does not reaction mass, eg all propulsions systems we have rely on flinging stuff out the back to make us go faster, this doesn't. Even though it made my head hurt it and I did not understand the maths it does sound pheasable but it is "out on the limb" of physiscs(but still within currently accepted theory).
Its the only thing I have ever heard that sounds remotely like working for solar/instellar travel.

The parrallel univers bit with huge magnetics fields does seem a bit unrealistic, we have no know way of making those field strengths, that kind field strength would really rip the crap out of any materials we use today.

I think it'll either work or they will learn a new bit of physics.

I am goping to show it to my brother, he should be able to understand the math.

My mistake. While typing I was watching something on Discovery channel and got the units mixed up with those being used in the program.

The unitsI meant to use were the standard field intensity unit T =Tesla, not Torr which is a unit of atmospheric pressure.

1 Tesla = the field intensity that generates 1 newton of force per ampere of current per meter of conductor. Alternatively it can be the total magnetic flux divided by the area or 10,000 Gauss.

Earths magnetic field is about 19-20 µT at 45 deg. latitude
An MRI machine uses about 3-5 T
                      A sunspots field: ~12 T
                      Highest man-made non-destructive field (impulse): 80T
Highest man-made field made using explosives (impulse): 2600T
A neutron star generates up to 100,000,000 T

As far as the two new subspace universes go: that's nothing compared to the current "favorite" theory of physicts; (mem)brane theory. It has 11 spatial dimensions and results in a nearly infinite number of universes (a "multiverse").
