    hey guys,
just a heads up, while I will still be watching constantly, I am probably going to post very little over the next few months.

I have a rather heavy decision to make - not bad, not good - so no stress, I just have come to a cross roads in my life.

It won't affect murc in anyway, and I will still be around.

    Cheers

All the best, Dan. In deciding to make a decision, you have made the best decision already

Might as well fill you in.
Visa is due up in a few weeks, that will be extended.

But I have been here logistically for >5 years, soon for immigration purposes I will have been here the required length of time to apply for Naturalization.

I can not see me returning to Oz. However Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship.

Not being well versed in Japanese or Australian civil law, what are the signifigant differences between the two nations, as far as your personal rights are concerned? If you can live with the differences, then that may ease your decision somewhat.

Best of luck, at any rate.

nominally I have most of the same rights as a native here.
house loan is almost impossible without either a residence visa - currently on spousal (yes she is still dragging that on)
Reality is, there are other parts of Japanese culture that are harder for me, like the family register - I don't have one. so when I do eventually get married again etc, where if I am naturalized, my wife would be recorded on mine, as would my children, while I remain just a resident, all appears on hers. parts of the law would see her as a single mother etc.

Simply put, I will live here, I will eventually die here (though rumor has it, I am pretty hard to kill).
I would like to be able to achieve a point, where I don't have to worry about visa renewal every 3 years, not have to worry about something happening and loosing my ability to stay in my chosen home.

I have pretty well made up my decision, but there is still a lot to consider and review. like changing my family name.
