Click on the "ML" button in winamp. Choose the directories or drives it should seek for music. There you go: Searchable, sortable database of your music, with artists and albums listed. You add songs to your playlist by dragging from the media library (or just play one song - erasing your old playlist - by double-clicking it in the media library).

If you don't like the interface, try other skins - many of them are VERY different (though not necessarily practical).

Well I had to stop using foobar2000 because it had problems playing music while I was working in Visual Studio; lots of stuttering, etc.

I'm back to trying WinAMP. I think my problem was that I only installed the lite version and the classic skin. I'll try the full version now.
      P.S. You've been Spanked!

Yes, the classic interface looks a bit... old. Classic skins are also really only skins, they don't change the shape, etc. What I said above was in regard to modern skins.

I use Winamp with a modified in_mpg123.dll renderer from otachan.com, set to render in 24bits while using replaygain ... haven't heard anything better than that yet

I've been using Muine which is an album based player. Super simple but with the features in the right place and is great for that. It's for Linux but made using C#, don't know if it works in Windows.

Basically you import folders and it keeps watch on them. Using album name and track numbers it groups items into albums. Then there are two ways to queue songs: an album list and a song list. In both views a search bar is present that lets you type in words to match artist name, album name or song name and it auto filters the list.

Really I think there should be two options in every music player: queue next and add to queue. The former being play this song after the current song ends and then continue in the playlist. The latter being add this song to the end of the queue. The only player that I know of which ever had a queue separate from the playlist was Winamp3.

It's a really useful feature if you think oh, I want to listen to a song, but leave my playlist intact. In every other music player you have to manually edit the playlist just to do that (ie add to playlist and then drag song to desired position).

Winamp is by far my favourite, when you get the milkdrop, tripex3 and r2/extreme wa2 visualisations, you will be in love.

Although now I have an iPod, I am forced to use itunes more. And now I have my Etymotic er6i earphones, my ipod is the only way I can listen to music!

Winamp 5 has extensive queueing controls, too, and a music library.

                  long time winamp user here.
I have only very few skins, I tend to use the Classic interface the most.

Maggi, the .dll you were saying. Can you provide more detail? (ie, where can I put my grubby little fingers on a copy? )

the url was otachan.com (exactly like that, adding a www. at the beginning will give you a 403-forbidden error).

                      Hope that helps

Interestingly...I'm back with Winamp now, mostly due to flawlessly working Audioscrobbler plugin (sig), together with big changes in foobar. Oh, and also experimenting with Muine on Ubuntu - really nice.
