  • The Doctor invades America

It's official. The BBC and the SciFi channel have inked a deal that will bring the first season, option on the second, of the new BBC Dr. Who series to the US in March of this year. The deal will cause the US release of the Dr. Who series on DVD to be pushed back until the series airs on SciFi, but Canada will get the DVDs on schedule for some reason.

There is happiness in the world today. SciFi is really doing great lately.

At the very least their production values should be much improved over the original. Tom Baker is a tough Doctor to follow, though.

We have already had the first of the new series here in OZ.
I thought it was pretty good, defintley a step up over the last of the old series

We should be getting the second of the new ones soon.

The CBC carried the first season here so there's no reason to hold back the DVDs.

I watched most of the episodes. I thought that some were very good and others were campy and dumb.

IIRC, there's been some shakeup with the actor playing the Doctor. The first guy quit for exhaustion and the second guy quit after like one or two episodes because he got a movie deal or something.

I haven't followed those details too closely because I just couldn't get into the series. Like I said, too campy.
        P.S. You've been Spanked!

Yeah....Martin Scorcese and other major directors are signed on to do movies or miniseries for them plus Battlestar Galactica is getting both high ratings and critical acclaim. Happy beancounters at Sci-Fi Channel these days indeed.

Glad to see The Doctor coming back to these shores....and for the record if at least some episodes weren't campy I'd be disappointed

Pop-quiz for all Who-vians: What is the native form of the TARDIS? We know that the Doctor's TARDIS looks like a London Police Call Box because the chamelion device is broken and he's never gotten around to fixing it. We also know that the thing is actually HUGE. But what does it look like in its natural state?

IIRC it's a chemeleon and can take any shape, but the Doctors TARDIS has a chameleon circuit that's broken and the shape stuck in police box mode. Because of the difference between its inside and outside dimensions the implication is that it's a tesseract.

I dont believe they've ever shown a TARDIS in it's "natural" form in any Dr.Who episiod... at least that I can remember.

I do remember seeing a schematic for the interiour of the TARDIS a long time ago.

On a side note: The chameleon circuit was repaired (albiet briefly) during the 8th doctor i believe. I dont remember the details anymore but i believe the Dr. put it back to it's broken state.

Another trivia question: What is the Dr.'s name and in which episoid did it air?

He's been called many names over the years, but it was never defined in the production notes.

In the novel "Remembrance Of The Daleks" he was called "Ka Faraq Gatri" (Bringer of Darkness) by the Daleks. In "The Armageddon Factor" he was called "Theta Sigma" or "Thete" for short by Drax, who remembered him from the Time Lord Academey. In "The Wheel In Space" Jamie called him "Dr. John Smith", which he later uses himself. In "The Highlanders" he signs a message "Dr. Von Wer".

All that aside every time he's had to account for himself by the other Time Lords ("The War Games", the Inquiry in "Deadly Assassin" and the "The Trial of A Time Lord") he's always referred to as "The Doctor".

AKA (and aliases): Dr. Foreman, The Dark One, Eighth Man Bound, The Evergreen Man, the Evil One, He Whose Name Dare Not Be Mentioned, The Other, The Relic, The Saviour, Snail, Time's Champion, Wormhole, Dr. Caligari, Dr. Galloway, Dr. Johann Schmidt, Dr. Jon Smythe, The Great Wizard Qui Quae Quod, James Alistair Bowman, Lazarus, Lung Tau (the Dragon's Head), Mr. Pendragon, The Savant, Vaughn Sutton etc.

No, unfortuneatly not. Much of it was from memory but for the last paragraph. Many years I watched Dr. Who daily on PBS thanks to my brand, spanking new-tech toy, the VCR
