  • USNS Alan Shepard

    The USNS Alan Shepard is to be the third of a new class of combat logistics force ships called "T-AKE's". Don't ask

    It's ~689 feet (210 meters) long and displaces over 35,968 metric tonnes.

    The Shepard will the the third ship in the new "Lewis & Clark" class. The list goes like this so far;

    T-AKE 1: USNS Lewis & Clark (explorers of the American North West in 1804)
    T-AKE 2: USNS Sacagawea (L & C's Shoshone guide. She's also on the US $1 coin)
    T-AKE 3: USNS Alan Shepard

    Nice to see Alan Shepard honored this way.

    BTW: for those overseas this is the US Sacagawea Dollar;

    OK, so why is this interesting? Are these ships somehow special (other than belonging to God's Armyâ„¢)? Who the fsck is Alan Shepard?

    I'm just asking. Seems kinda pointless to me posting whenever a ship gets christened or something.

      Alan Shepard was only the first Mercury astronaut and commanded Apollo 14, so a major ship honoring him just might mean something to the people who know their history

      BTW: the T-AKE's belong to Gods Navyâ„¢, not Gods Armyâ„¢

      Besides, US Army ships use the "USAV" prefix.

          The cast of that movie drives me crazy.

          Sam Shepard doesn't play Alan Shepard, he plays Chuck Yeager
          Scott Glenn dosn't play John Glenn, he plays Alan Shepard
          Chuck Yeager dosn't play himself, he plays a bartender

          Argh
