Photo retouching

It's nothing new to us, but I like this campaign: They are showing girls how much retouching is going into magazine photos etc, trying to prevent girls from comparing themselves to artificial beauty: http://demo.fb.se/e/girlpower/retouch/

I don't know if this will help much (most girls probably won't ever stumble upon that site), but it's still a good idea.

Saw this elsewhere and there have been a few other similar attempts at showing how much retouching goes into a cover model's final look (or elsewhere).

It's an admirable goal, but even untouched I think most girls would still find the imagery intimidating, just on the basis of who they are comparing themselves to; "She's famous and on the cover of Cosmo, so she must be beautiful".

Of course, but I think part of the message of campaigns like these is to teach girls to be more media critical in general, so that they compare themselves with models less, because they can't ever be sure whether a girl in a photo really is beautiful or not. It's kind of like what the media does in reverse: They are led to believe that every photo model is potentially ugly or plain looking, instead of being led to believe that everybody but them is beautiful and glamourous and sexy.

FT: As strange as it may sound, the reason for some women (and not only the obvious choice) to be pretty isn't only men. It's for their own self-esteem and of course rivalry with other girls.

BTW, while "before" isn't an ugly girl at all, when you quickly switch back and forth between "before" and "after", her face looks fat and old compared to "after". Distressing!

All the retouching looks pretty bad to me, don't even bother looking through SI's swimsuit edition and such anymore.

My best friend's cousin works for a graphic design studio that focuses on sports advertising. He does the retouching on a lot of gals. I've seen some of the before and afters... wow what a difference. He also helps out on some photo shoots, "Trevor, I need you to hold the light shield closer to her butt...", true story.
