I know you like to shorten names in the US (except you guys ), but as we don't have this tradition in Denmark, there is one thing that has always bothered me; how does William become Bill????
Am I wrong, but have I not heard Germans use "Willi" for Wilhelm? Not the same in Denmark?

You probably have head it in Germany, they seem to give each other nicknames quite often, but in Denmark we just don't shorten names (at least to my knowledge it's not very common). In your example, the danish name would probably be William (and not Wilhelm) and who ever had the name would be called William.

How does John (ostensibly short for Jonathan) become Jack?
How does Margaret become PEGGY?
