Coke Zero, isn't that... cycla-I mean aspar-I mean sucralose?
Sucralose is just as bad for you as any other artificial sweetener. In other words, my children will NEVER EVER EVER EVER have any.
Well, not as bad as Aspartame. We're pretty paranoid about not letting Logan have any. We drill it into him not to take ANY candy from ANYONE that is "sugar-free", or to eat ANY food that's "lite" or "sugar-free", and ESPECIALLY no beverages.
Julie is a partial phenylketoneuric. That involves having one missing gene. If ONE of my parents gave me ONE bad copy of a gene... our kids could be full-on, and aspartame could literally scar their brains.
I told the preschool teacher that under NO circumstances was Logan to be given ANYTHING "lite" and explained the allergy.
It was driven home the other night. We were at Applebee's, and Julie had been drinking iced tea, and I had Pepsi. She asked for a refill, and I asked for a water. My water came, but her refill... well, she took a sip. It was DIET PEPSI. Within 5 minutes she had an "almost migraine" (not actual migraine, but still needed a big Motrin). From ONE SIP that she spit out most of.
Sucralose, people will tell you, is made from "real sugar". That's ... uh ... CHEMICALLY ALTERED to not have any calories. Good. Same problems as Aspartame - it'll **** UP your insulin levels. If you were borderline diabetic before... you'll be full-on NOW!
Julie's brother never had diabetes. He gained a ton of weight in his early 20's, and in his late 20's he lost all of it... in part by switching to "diet" everything. He is now a full-on adult-onset diabetic. He was predisposed, to be sure, but there's NO DOUBT that the artificial sweeteners helped it along.
The "hype" about all the bad things that Sucralose does... some of it is ridiculous. It doesn't rape your grandma's dog. But it DOES break down, under rare circumstances, to formaldehyde-like substances in your intestines. Ick. And frankly, I don't WANT to know if I'm the 0.001% of people for whom sucralose is a slow poison.
So let's see.
We have Cyclamate, which gives you tumors the size of grapefruits.
We have Saccharin, which just tastes BAD... and MIGHT give you cancer if you eat an awful lot of it. But you can get Tab again!
We have Aspartame, which causes mental retardation in children, and epileptic seizures in a significant percentage of people. Ask Claymonkey - it gave him headaches the size of Oregon!
And now we have Sucralose, which is MOSTLY safe for MOST people, but for a small percentage it poisons you and you die.
NICE.
And topping it all off is High Fructose Corn Syrup, which will give you a FAT ****ING ASS, but which is otherwise harmless.
