*sigh* when I finish feeding Jacob, I'll look it up. It's a trick. The extra person comes from pieces of the others. I'll show you, gimme a few minutes.
The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!

I'm the least you could do

I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
    I would still get screwed

Well in as much as we all know it's not a supernatural event, that leaves trick as prety much our only alternative.

The average height goes down when the extra guy appears.

It's quite simple. The trick is in where the "cut" occurs for each section. A select number of the characters lose either the top of their hair or the bottom of their shoes, which become either the same or the opposite after the switch. In addition, you can readily see that not all of them are cut in half (these would be the ones with the aforementioned observation).

The additional man comes from the fourth row (if you look at each slanted vertical row).

Jason's link provides a GREAT (and detailed) explanation.

Missed that, he must have posted while I was formulating my non-answer

I had to search for that, because I couldn't find the drawing I made to satisfy myself about it a year back. I figured it out but wanted to be sure. That page has neat color-coded drawings, MUCH better than my shitty photo-chops.
