  • Anyone know Venice well?

Wifey and I are lucky enough to be going there "senza bambini" at the end of March for 6 days. We are staying on the Lido island.

Does anyone have and tips/recommendations for what to do/see?

    TIA

    T.

PS Thats Venice, Italy, not Venice Beach

I was there when I was 12 or so.. can't remember much in detail..
Murano or something like that is an island with lots of glass blowing and such.. worth a visit.. other than that, I really cannot remember much

Of course, there are the classical things:
      - San Marco (both the square as the church)
      - Rialto Bridge
      - Murano (glass blowing stuff)
      - cemetary (it is a seperate island)
      - that church (white, with a big dome) at the end of the canal grande (more or less visible from San Marco, it is on the opposite side)
      - there are very interesting churches (painted by well known painters, but I've seen so many churchers there I can't remember the names of them)

      Interesting:
      - Scala Dei Bovolo (fascinating building; the tower has a spiral staircase on the outside, interesting view over the roofs of Venice from the top of it)
      - Sally Guggenheim museum (if you are into modern art - might depend on the exhibition at hand though)
      - view from the Rialto Bridge early in the morning (not sure if you can get there early enough, as you are on the Lido): you see the boats that supply the restaurants and shops, a funny sight as this all goes via the water
      - San Marco square in the evening (not sure if you be there late enough): the restaurants on the square have live music (classical), but the players put on a show (e.g. play one violin with 2 people). Many people gather there, a great sight
      - Fenice Opera (when I was there, was still in restauration from the fire some years ago)

PS: Near one of the many churches, on an open square is Haig's bar.

Ta. @VJ you just reminded me when my parents did a tour of Italy some years back it became known as the 'ABC' tour, or 'Another Bl**dy Church'

@|Mehen| I reckon. Just built a system for someone with a 3.7GHz Venice...idles at 25-7 with the stock cooler, and doesn't even blink at DVD playback. I should imagine it would o/c loads, especially on the Gigabyte mobo, but I ain't gonna.

What's the cheapest way to get around Venice? I gather we can get a hydrofoil straight from the Marco Polo Airport to our Island (one of the reasons we chose that hotel, apart from price and online recommendations) and their website talks about various long-term or multi-ticket options.

We arrive Thurs evening, and leave Tues pm so that gives us 4 full days which should be more than enough time for Venice Island so we wouldn't mind going a bit further afield.

Get a multi-day pass (week pass or so) on the Vaporetto lines. IIRC, it costs the price of 4 (or 6) single trips. And believe me: you will use the Vaporettos often (if for no other reason than to cross the canal grande). It can take you anywhere (to Murano, Burano, cemetary, ...).

Well, I was there for a whole week, and didn't get bored...
