Whats good for removing clay soil for conservatory foundations?

    LOL@KvH It does feel like that sometimes.

    Pride is a problem here. Maybe if I had hired a mini-digger from the start but I didn't. So we continue using elbow-grease, supplemented by a 'breaker' -essentially a road-drill type affair with a 'clay spade' attachment. This is great for breaking up the earth ready for removal by spade, except where there is really soggy clay which is incredibly heavy and sticky.

    Another reason for not going with a minidigger is access. It might not make a tight turn into the back garden, I doubt it could dig into the corners I need, and I would still have to dump into a wheelbarrow and push that to the front of the house then either lift or dig that load into the skip.

    We have completely filled two midi-skips so far, only having completed the LHS footing (well nearly) which is very deep and the new garden retaining wall footing. I think we'll get these poured and then dig out for the remaining two conservatory walls using a fresh skip.
