What drivel. Notice that no one from years past except Marilyn Monroe even makes the list. This sort of poll scares me.. it means that true democracy would be rule by the utterly ignorant.

The article seems to say "biggest star," not "best actor." I have to agree with them. He makes more noise, more press, etc, than they did. Also, he has global coverage like they never did.

If you go by pure wealth (i.e. how much they have made from their movies), Harrison Ford is #1, and Julia Roberts is #2.

I honestly think that Tom Cruise will more than catch up by the time he's Ford's age.

Not that he's a great actor, but a money/fame generator.

Well, the only thing I think is that Tom Cruise has gone wacko with all the scientology BS.
I almost feel sorry for how Katie Holmes got brainwashed, and I really feel sorry for whats going to happen to their kid.

As an actor I quite like Cruise. He may not be of the same caliber as others in the traditional acting sense, but he generally performs consistently in the roles he's given. That's more than can be said for some more talented actors. Like him or not, you know what to expect when you watch a movie with Cruise in it.

In regards to Katie Holms, I read somewhere that she has actually been pushing for a Roman Catholic baptism. But meh, I watch movies for entertainment, not to give a crap about the actors' personal lives.

I will have to agree, ON the screen, he is always a sure hit.

But to beat out people like Jack Nicholson, Charlie Sheen, and De Niro?...

I actually found War of the Worlds amusing simply because Cruise was acted off the screen by a little girl.

I thought Cruise was really good in War of the Worlds. I put off seeing it for a long time, mostly because of his antics off screen, but when I finally got around to watching it I was really impressed.

I enjoyed Cruise in Risky Business Haven't yet seen The Last Samurai, but have not been impressed with him lately...as for Harrison Ford, he's gotta be the most overrated, overpaid actor ever, he has 0 emotional range on-screen and in some parts (like Patriot Games), he's dull enough to put you to sleep.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

I think the best acting job I have ever seen in a film was Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day. He played a character who had to hide his emotions, and yet manage to show them at the same time.. and then, when he finally goes out of the house, and you see him interact with ordinary pub-goers, WOW.. he just ever so subtly becomes a fish-out-of water, while again trying to smear an veneer of unflappability over himself. This was just a towering achievement, of which I have never seen the like elsewhere.

That was the year I realized how completely politicized the Oscars had become, When they gave the award to Tom Hanks for Philadelphia. Hanks was good, but the key was that he was playing a homosexual dying of AIDS, which was oh so timely and PC chic.. and of course they then had to give it to him again the next year because he played a retarded guy. Just play anyone with any mental deficiency and it's an automatic nomination.. look at Leonardo Di Caprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Pft. Oscars. What a joke.
