I daresay Zokes deserves most of the credit

I'd guess that Guess where this is... must be a hefty contributor. As it is being used only intermittently these days, maybe we should think about deleting the thread and its many attachments? What do others think?

I am not sooo fussed about size, just thought I would share, after tar.gz'ing the sql dump it came down to 327mb.
when we hit the point I can't backup to a single cd after archiving, then I will worry

Why not use a DVD instead?

the dvd is not the issue.
quite simple > half the db backup is the search tables.
when it hits an hour for me to transfer over the server pipe, and my local pipe an archived backup, it hints at the fact our database is hitting mysql's practical limits. sadly I only have a choice of mysql or mysql as a backend for the forum at this point in time.

So, we kill off all Zoke's posts and make him a mini?

There is no need to have the backup fit on a floppy...

Just of out curiosity, is there a way to see how much space I actually consume?

I probably consume more text space than you by a good margin. Though you have more posts, I am more long-winded.

not realy, the actual posts i could count up, but the search engine is a little more abstract.
first time it encounters a word, it adds it to the primary word table, and creates a ref link to that and the post id in a seperate table.
after that, each time it encounters the word, it just adds the ref to the link table.
This happens at post time, and delete time.

So posting a page full of oddball words would bloat the database, eh?

And just think of all the words we misspell.. multiple entries for the same word..

and I suppose those little dots I put in there sometimes also make a new word be added..

                            You mean those ellipses?
When I got a review back for a paper and one comment read: "drop the ellipses", so now I can show off my (?) knowledge.
