  • really interesting health study

jd writes "A study by US and British researchers on frequency of illnesses shows that even when you compare like groups in the US and the UK, people in the US are considerably sicker than their counterparts in the UK. This is after factors such as age, race, income, education and gender were taken into consideration. The most startling conclusion was that although the richest Americans were better off than the poorest Americans, they did no better (health-wise) than the poorest of the English. Previous studies of the entire population had shown similar results, with America placing around 25th amongst industrialized countries on chronic disease prevention, but it had been assumed that minorities and economics were skewing the results. This study suggests that maybe that isn't the case."

        What's wrong with this picture?

"Major Soda Brands Agree to Halt Sales to Public Schools"

THAT'S what's wrong.. Why should a country with an elected government seem to be enthralled to corporations, and whatever happens must be out of the goodness of their empty hearts? Our government is of absolutely no use if it cannot protect the people from the predations of corporations which by mandate of their charter are responsible only for providing profit to their shareholders.

        It should be this:

They make more money on chips, junk food, and sports/energy drinks anyway.

In fact, this probably is just a ploy to justify only offering their expensive beverage lines.

Only diet sodas would be sold to high schools.
This is even worse than selling real sodas, with all the added chemicals. They may be less caloric but I'm sure they are even worse for the general health. When my daughter was young, my wife and I told her that we had no objection to her having an occasional Coke or similar but it was to be considered as a treat. We told her outright that she should not drink diet drinks. She drank only local bottled water with meals, with her choice of fizzy, half-fizzy or flat, until she was old enough to learn the art of wine-drinking. She also had ample fruit juices and milk.

A 1.5 l Coke bottle would typically last our family a whole month!

After 1 week that bottle of cola is basicly caffienated sugar water. no wonder it lasts that long

My roommate and I tend to go through fruit juices like it was water. I myself also go through a lot of pepsi. If i'm not moving out of montreal then i will likely consider a water cooler or installing a filter/purifier for the tap.

You need that? Our tapwater here is of much higher quality than, say, Bonaqa or other crappy "Table Water".

Tap water he is generaly pretty good. The problem is that I've been drinking only bottled/purified water for years and now run the risk of getting sick if have tap water.

truth is I've been building my immunities by mixing down my drinking water with progresivly more tap water. I've gotten to the point where i can drink half a cup without being violently sick.

I actually looked for unsweetened tea in bottles at the local grocery store. It's NOT AVAILABLE. Every single variety (and there were 10 or more) was sweetened with high fructose corn syrup and other crap, or it was "diet" and full of aspartame.. even the one labeled 100% natural!!

When you have to brew your own tea at home to get something healthy to drink, it's much less likely to get done, especially in families where both parents work (which is nearly all.) I actually found a fruit juice with no added sugar or sweeteners, which I like well enough to drink a lot of. I also drink lots of water. If there was a drink machine in a school, they need to have ONLY bottled water, fizzy bottled water, unsweet tea, unsweet tea with real lemon, hormone-free milk, and different varieties of 100% fruit juice.

BTW, drinking milk in this country makes men and 7yo girls grow boobs from all the hormones they shoot the cows up with in an attempt to make them produce more. And we are supposed to accept this as good because it's "good for business."

Lipton is the only company I know of who makes an un-sweetened tea that you can actually purchase at the store. It's called "Un-sweetened, No Lemon". Cracks me up that they have to tell you what is NOT in it. I too, only like unsweetened tea.

WTF! Things like this really make me realize in what a safe country I live. Our tapwater follows about the same purity standards as our mineral water.

My god. It's hard here to buy unsweetened bottled tea, too, because people actually like to brew their tea. Nobody would think of comparing stuff like Liptonice to tea - one is a refreshing cold drink like a lemonade, the other is tea.

Juice must be 100% juice here. Most german juice is without sugar (which is declarated on the label, because due to EU legislation, juice is now allowed to contain up to 15 grams of sugar per liter) or it must not be called "Saft" (juice). The rest is called Nektar and "Fruchtsaftgetränk" (fruit juice beverage).

And hormone levels in milk cows are as low as to not cause premature boobs development etc.

I did not know that of the US, and it is shocking. I had only heard about chickens in Puerto-Rico causing this and that was, geesh, ages ago, 1986?

We have the best tap water in the world. It's quite a bit more expensive than it was 20 years ago at euro 1.31 per cubic mtr or 1,000 ltr, but it is stll a bargain. Of course, we use a lot of it as use the same water for bathing, toilet flushing, bi-kini car washing and the like.

Edit: German water is fine as well but it is pretty hard. For making tea (yeah, we make it here as well. Why buy heavy packs of tea-drink when you can just do with a few whats-it-called-in-english?) or coffee or washing your clothes in the washing machine. Ours is soft and tender
