  • Capt. Cook's "Endeavour" found....

    at the bottom of Newport Harbor, RI, USA;

    The ships are believed to have been part of a fleet of 13 British transporters sunk deliberately by the British to act as a barrier against French bombardment. This was to protect their stronghold in Newport against a French fleet sailing by in July and August of 1778.

    One of the sunken ships was Lord Sandwich (originally called Endeavour), the ship that famous explorer Capitan James Cook used on his first voyage to the South pacific in 1768, said Kathy Abbass, Rhode Island marine archaeology project director.
