Buy a 12$ set of allan keys and you can take whatever that isn't locked on my bike. Parts are easily stolen too, especially quick releases.

Best bet, buy a bike that's not worth stealing, that way no one will be tempted to break your lock get a mega lock for it. Buy a second bike, but a better bike, one that you can take out for the occasional trail biking and leave it in your house when not in use.

I left my bike outside at night in Amager once. And ONLY once! It was outside exactly 1 hour after sunset. In that time someone had stolen the shifters, the hand grips, the cables and the brakes. The derailers were sitting on the ground and my chain was off. The only reason why the rest didn't get stolen was because only one link broke on my chain, and it only broke in one direction, so the theives got frustrated and left (that or someone came and they had to split).

From then on I left my bike in the bike cellar, locked, after dark. I lived within 5 km of the Copehagen U, btw. If you are ever in Copenhagen you can always tell who the Mormon missionaries are, because their bikes are locked together with no fewer than four chains, two of which are the big fat D-locks of the fat 4 cm thick kevlar chains, like this:

The small lock stops the petty theif, the big lock is for the rest.

The best strip job I saw once was an ATB, once again in Amager. The bike was locked with two giant D-locks (the big solid steel kind). One D went from front wheel to frame to a pipe bolted to the building. The other the back wheel to the frame. The theives had clipped the spokes and stolen the hubs. Stole the seat, shifters, handle grips and bar, cables, sprocket assembly, pedals and brakes. So the only thing left on the street was a frame and two hubless wheels, locked to the building by two giant D-locks.

        True story.
Monday I was outside our building and a guy rode up on a bike and parked.
He had a cable lock, but it wasn't long enough to go around the trees in front.
So he picked a parking meter to lock to.
He did stare at it for a while befor locking up his bike and going in.
Why? Because there is no parking outside our building now and the heads have been removed from the parking meter posts.

So he had locked his bike to 1 meter featureless post.

        Why did he bother?

          Crapp!

They demand that I produce the recite from when I bought it (despite that It was them that payed my last bike, they know damn well how old it is).

The recite is gone, it was stolen when some crackheads broke into my storage

Since the wire lock I use is bought at the same time as the bike it's not certified against the regs that came a year ago and therefore they half the value of the bike. (it's been proved that the certified locks arnt any safer just overly expensive)

Add the self risk and I'm lucky if I get $50 from the insurance company (if I get anything)

I also have an "extra" insurance thats suposed to give me back the self risk but only if I buy a new bike from the same manufactor, which I'm not that sure I want as the bike rusted amazingly fast and had worn out much faster than any of my other bikes.

Anyway I have borrowed a...well something...I suposed it could be called a bike
From my coworker, I'll have to do untill I get a new bike

Tip: we keep reciepts in either our fireproof safe (recent & those that cost <$250) or the banks safety deposit box with the insurance documents, DVD records (lists w/photos etc.) of our belongings & legal papers.

Seriously though, get a used, and used-looking bike. It won't get stolen that fast, and I don't think it'd be uglier than your moped (sorry)

Bike shops will generally give you a 'replacement' receipt if they think they will get the business once thew insurance is settled. Apparently.

uhm....the bike that was stolen was 4 years old, looked really used, had severe rust problems and the tires was almost totally cracked.

                    This moped? ugly?

The only person who could safely drive around on that thing would be an extremely beautiful young woman, since no one would notice the moped.

Over the recent year we had a couple of nasty accidents involving mopeds, in one of them one young woman lost her life, the driver didnt see the moped untill it was to late.

To many of those accidents happened because the driver "didnt see" the moped.

I'll admit that the blue color didnt come out as it should have :-\

Just thinking safety wise I should have painted it bright red
