The US bill to make net neutrality a law has failed the US House. This bill could allow telecoms, cable comapanies, ISPs, tier 1 backbone providers, etc, to create "toll lanes" on the internet. Meaning if Google or Microsoft don't pay up to every single mom and pop network their bandwidth could be cut off or severely limited to their sites. Thus turning high speed sites into dial-up like speed (imaging downloading the Vista beta at 56k ).

But, when I pay my internet company a monthly fee, I expect to be able to access the whole internet equally. In my town, there are really only two providers.. Time Warner and SBC.. anyone else uses their lines. That's not real choice, just like choosing between a Democrat corporate lapdog or a Republican corporate lapdog is no choice at all. If both decide to restrict access to sites that don't pay them kickbacks, what good is my internet access if it goes from $29.00 to $5.00 a month? It's worthless, just like that cheaply made chinese lowball crap which are the only products available anymore because of Wal-Mart.

To be honest, I already pay for bandwidth out the door, and what comes in as well. Part of my package is 2000GB a month of transfer.

While I have severe issues with text and image websites potentially being slowed down, I do not have any issues where premium services may be shaped. the equipment to shuffle enough bits for on demand high bandwidth video etc is not cheap, and the demands are increasing.

What it meant here, not that I am aware of similar laws being in effect, is that the premium content providers partner with the isp's et al to provide their service, and guarntee enough of the pipe to deliver.
To that end, we already have movies on demand over that glass fiber pipe I have into my house.
