On the iBooks it's the color of the molded shell, which has a grey tone (sorta like putty) on the inside (separate piece from the outer). The inner shell is the color you see.

So the spots that arise from constant contact, such as palm of the hand, aren't just due to wearing away of a layer of coating. I do believe their is a layer of coating present, but it acts as more of a protectant. Which is probably what reacts to cause the slightly darker discoloration.

Is this just a MacBook problem or it happens on MacBook Pro's too?

          Sweet!

Another reason NOT to get a MacBook, on top of having a crappy video card it has a crappy casing.

all i can say, my second macbook pro is sweet, first one had a silicon problem with the x1600, but it seems to be an anomily, not a common occurance.
17" and 7200rpm drive, damn thing is a portable desktop

Oh? Can you elobarate more on that problem? Cause my roomate noticed that when he runs 3D Mark2003, during the Pixel SHader 2.0 test, there are lines across the screen and the colors are a bit funky. But so far it only happened in 3D Mark 2003.

I was referring to the iBooks, not the MacBooks. The casing is a bit different on the latter. Note though that the PowerBooks suffered from a similar sort of spotting as the iBooks. Just natural wear and tear.

A MacBook Pro's case is pretty well the same case as that on a PowerBook.

There are apparently issues with running the software on Intel Macs. Not positive why or what causes it. So unless your roommate has problems with it elsewhere, it's not something to worry about.
