    This reminds me of an ad I saw tonight for some MacGuyver DVDs.. someone offers MacGuyver a gun, and he waves it off saying something like "nah, I do better without, thanks."

        Back to the original question though.

        I am just facinated by the idea that someone would feel the need to carry a gun while going about thier normal business.

        So I'm trying to picture that idea added to my oun life.

        Tomorrow is Friday, we always go out to eat on Fridays.
        also, it's going to be 110F (43.3C)

        So is this the procedure (in addition to the regular things involved with taking the family to eat)?
        1, Go to gun cabinet and unlock it to get gun.
        2, Strap on gun
        3, Put on jacket to cover gun (remember it's still well over 40C at this time)
        4, Drive 2KM to the restaurant and eat, then drive back.
        5, Lock gun back up.

        Is this really what you would do?
        If not then the question remains:
        Where do you take your family that is so dangerous that you need to pack a gun?

          These days; the world. Even in the midwest small cities we're seeing organized gang activity, and unfortunately one is MS-13;

          and these SOB's don't stick to their turf. They cause all manner of trouble even in what one would normally consider 'safe' areas. Odds are good they're in OKC or Colorado but 99% of people don't know it...yet. Holdups, machete attacks, rapes, muggings....nice guys

          You presume too much. We have both full sized and compact weapons. The Beretta 92FS Elite (9mm) works well at home, in a shoulder holster under a suit coat or for coup de gras when big game hunting;

          while the compact is a smaller SIG-Sauer P239 (.40 S&W) for use in a waistband or belt holster with casual wear. This is a very compact weapon that disappears under a sweater or pullover shirt, which are what I prefer wearing;

          Margie prefers the Beretta 9000S (9mm) as her purse/fanny pack/thigh holster gun;

            But, you really haul all that to go out to the neighborhood Chinese restaurant?

              We don't go out for Chinese because I cook it at home, but generally; yes.

              As with car accidents most street crime happens close to home. Because I'm older & use a cane I'm what the local cops call a 'high value target', meaning that to gangsta's I have a bulls eye on my back. Theoretically 'easy pickings'.

              The SIG in a waistband holster fits on the back of my pants. No more complicated than using a cell phone case. Margies also has one of these and a fanny pack holster, but when she's wearing a dress it's often in her thigh holster.

                That just amazes me.
                But then, I don't have a cell phone either.

                I'm about as old as you and only 5'7" so it seems like I would be a 'high value target' too.
                (only because they haven't seen in my wallet yet, I have to admit)
                I just can't work up that much paranoia here in peaceful OKC.

                      Well, you see, another good deed done...

                      http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/07/21/sup....ap/index.html

                      The perp was smart enough to give up when the knife fight became a gunfight. He's going away for a looong, long time.... Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to create harm...8 counts....Consecutively If my recollection of Tennesee law is correct...

                      No shots fired; but if the perp was within 21 feet of Cope (the "Witness" aka Hero Who Stopped the Violence), Cope would have been within his rights to dump the magazine into him; no prosecutor would have even considered bringing charges against him.

                        eYup. Too bad no one in the store was packin'

                        Here they'd be prepping a parade & keys to the city for Cope. Maybe a run for city council.

                        Five victims, one in critical condition, were admitted to the Regional Medical Center, the main trauma hospital for the Memphis area. Three others were less badly hurt and treated at another hospital.

                        The attacker, chasing one victim into the store's parking lot, was subdued by Chris Cope, manager of a financial services office in the same small shopping center, Higgins said.

                        Cope said he grabbed a 9mm semiautomatic pistol from his pickup truck when he saw the attacker chasing the victim "like something in a serial killer movie."

                        "When he turned around and saw my pistol, he threw the knife away, put his hands up and got on the ground," Cope told The Associated Press. "He saw my gun and that was pretty much it."
                        Big pistols have that effect on most people
