First cousin marriages could hardly have remained taboo during the Victorian period, since Victoria and Albert were first cousins and were supposedly very happy together. They also ruled nearly half the world, so one would not have been wise to declare their marriage as sinful. There was that whole hemophilia thing, however..

      Is this incorrect?
It is correct between minors (since relatively recently) but, I believe, not correct between adults: I don't have a copy of the code pénal so cannot confirm it. The French legal system is based on the code Napoléonic, in turn based strongly on Roman canonic law, so it would surprise me if adult incest were permitted, unless there has been a modification in recent years.

      2. Because many, many of them are arrogant, annoying & generally PITA's. Not from the media, but from personal experience. It's not all French though; Normandy was quite pleasant and hospitable. Paris was pretty, but the people flat-out sucked.

You also have to admit that Mitterand & Chirac et al haven't done them any good on this side of the pond. Even most libs I know can't stand the French, particularly the Parisians.
I agree that Parisians do not show the best side of the French, but is it not the same in all large cities where there is no personal touch? If you judged Americans from a typical NY cab driver or cop, would you consider the USA as being a welcoming country, yet it is. So is France, and I've been to most parts of it.

And many Americans are arrogant, loud-mouthed and PITAs, especially when travelling abroad, when they look down their noses at the "natives".

You also have to admit that Nixon, Reagan, GWB et al haven't done themselves any good on this side of the pond.

War is shit - which is why I'm a pacifist. There will always be collateral damage and I'm sure thousand of Frenchmen were killed by US forces between 1944 and 1945, but the French are not ungrateful for the part that the US played in their liberation. Even de Gaulle grudgingly admitted that and he felt he was shabbily treated by the Americans, as did a number of Frenchwomen who were raped by American forces and Frenchmen who were tortured and killed by them, often for little or no reason. I'm sorry for your uncle, but I'm equally sorry for all victims of war, whichever side they are on. War is shit!

But to condemn a whole nation because of one personal incident is not very equitable, is it?
