That's so weird, that Hispanic Americans are known as "Latin," yet Italians are not.
Well that all has roots in Latin America which gets it name from the fact that Romance (those derived from Latin) languages are spoken there. It is French in origin, but gained usage in the Americas as a way to distinguish from Anglo-American and Dutch areas.
