Funny that you should bring that up - our kids love playing the games on Namco Museum (GameCube). While not quite the same age as the ones from Atari; with games like Pac-Man, Pole Position, Dig Dug, and Galaga; it's still pretty addictive.
I think a lot of it has to do with there being nothing forced unto the player in terms of storyline or visuals. Sure, those things are present, but the primitive graphics and bare-bone plots leave more to the imagination than most games today. Nevermind the fact that you can basically just sit down and play.
