You know, they're always talking about mixing drugs and alcohol. I wonder what'll be the result of mixing the immortality pill with viagra...

Would you take an Immortality drug?

It reminds me of a movie, but I can't remember the title. It's about a guy and his son who end up in a village (I think their car broke down), where some mysterious stuff is going on (all people live to be 100 years old, to the day). It turns out there is a fountain of youth, but to prevent overpopulation the people commit suicide (for which they throw a party) at the age of 100.
I first thought the lead actor was Keanu Reeves, but it wasn't. Any thoughts?
Back on topic...
Well, living forever (without ageing) does seem nice (there is so much one likes to learn and know)... But what if everybody does it? Dunno...

There is one sure way to become immortal. Write some first-class literature in French and therefore be elected to the Académie française. The members of this august institution are known as "les immortels", but they have to wear a silly costume (known as l'habit vert or green clothes) and carry a sword!

Bear in mind that life in general is reversable with alarmingly little effort!
If the established age for the treatment is 65, the death rate for men 65-70 could rise dramatically. Men feeling that long forgotten flush of youth and vigor would be going out and trying those death-defying activities they hadn't the means or the nerve to try the first time around, and getting themselves killed in the process.

I probably would, but being 24, what do I know? I wouldn't if my partner chose not to. Who could stand being forever young and seeing your partner age and wrinkle?
It would be unwise though if everybody took these, or we could have far fewer children (exactly one per life). I think I would keep a pill around just in case, and maybe join some kind of colonization program, after I've lived life enough on earth.
Really though, like with many of you, death doesn't bother me. The process of dying some deaths does though. Should I become fatally ill, I'd get all the painkillers I could, live the last few days/weeks/months of my life as fully as I could, seeing many friends, maybe doing something I didn't dare or didn't get around to so far, and then kill myself, or have me killed by a doctor (I hope and I believe this will be legal - I even fear it will be expected or mandatory - when I am old).

Well the problems that such a drug would create are HUGE in our current society. We would all HAVE to stop rampantly reproducing, wouldn't we? Try pitching that to the right-to-lifers, the Catholics, the devout Muslims, etc.The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and teenage girls are FBI agents!
I'm the least you could do
If only life were as easy as you
I'm the least you could do, oh yeah
If only life were as easy as you
I would still get screwed

Even if you were immortal, eventually you'd want to die. We are supposed to die, that is the way of things adn I for one expect to die. If I were immortal I'd probably spend my life trying to find a way to die.
@Gurm: No kidding, such a drug should NEVER exist.Titanium is the new bling!

One could always take their own life if it got tiresome.
And finding a way to die is a pretty trivial problem.Chuck

Without thinking if I would want to live "forever", I can see two major issues about aging immortality:
1. Overpopulation... we'll have to start colonizing new planets or start building a lot of space stations and meanwhile implement the Chinese one child solution (no uncle/aunt, cousins...).
2. Think dictatorship (Cuba, N.Korea), at one point we'll probably have a unified world government, that in its turn can be brought down and replaced by a dictatorship. At that point the only viable solution is civil war.

I'd take it
Actually I dont think there will ever be a working "imortallity drug"
A stop aging drug would not make you invulenrable to diseases etc accidents etc.
A "super health" drug would probably be aging retarding (Forget anything even near Wolverine healing powers, they blatantly violates the second law of thermodynamics )
Even a combined removal of the gene that causes aging and something to soup up the body's natural healing capabilitys withous casuing trubble would probably not allow anyone near attaining "imortality"
Lastly, anyonme thinkin that an "age stoping" drug would cause massive overpopulation just needs to visit the local ER at friday nightIf there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.
