Sadly, this kid's cuteness is nothing special in the world of cuteness. Cuter than me? Sure. But there are thousands of people who are cute. None of them get contracts.

Ha ha. I just find it amazing that every time someone shows a video of someone who an actually play their instrument, people go "wow, he's amazing he needs a contract!"

Walk into any music store anywhere, hang out for a while near the guitars, and you'll see someone come in who plays like that Korean kid. It's what gets half of us playing in the first place - seeing that average people can learn to really rock.

But then again I grew up in music stores and bars and lounges, and with people who played live music more nights than not. I'm sure many of the things I find impressive are someone else's commonplace occurence, too!

I mean, I'm not really all that good on the guitar. But my in-laws are always astonished when I start playing, like I'm amazing or something. It's always sort of astonished me that many people can't tell how good or bad a player is, y'know?

I know less about computer hardware than just about anyone else on MURC but I get that "Is there ANYTHING you don't know about computers?" from friends and relatives when I fix minor problems on their computers all the time.

I suppose this is true. Add to this that the untrained ear can't HEAR my screwups...

This Canon kid, for example, has a lot of hesitation in his playing. He's diving for the next riff, not fluid at all in a lot of places. But I know - having played the clip for a few people at this point - that many many people can't hear it.

My wife, for example, is relatively tone-deaf. It's hereditary. She and her brother can't hold a tune - and her brother can't even hold a simple ryhthm! The music he listens to is painful, because he mistakes earnestness for intensity.

I'm with Gurm on this one. The synthesiser background drowns out a lot of his problems, including poor plectrum control. He is competent and agile, but not a top class instrumentalist. I'd like to see him try to play a solo acoustic guitar, to be able to judge him better.

Thank you Brian. I wasn't going to go into details, to be honest... but I certainly COULD. And I'm not knocking the kid, really i'm not! He's what, 16? 17? He's coming along just fine. I actually think that this whole "record yourself on the web" thing is GREAT for budding guitarists. Lets them see if they completely suck or if they're coming along well. This kid needs to play with a band, though. That'll take away a lot of his hesitation and fumbling.

Speaking of which, I need to start playing with other people again, too. My timing has gotten... OFF. That happens when you only play alone.
